What You May Not Know About the Toyota RAV4 and How it Stacks up Against the Competition

Toyota is no stranger to dominance. Models like the Camry, Corolla and Tacoma, among others, are consistently at—or near—the top of their class in terms of sales. So, it should come as no surprise that the Toyota RAV4 is yet again the best-selling compact SUV in the U.S. in 2020.
Perhaps the primary reason for the RAV4’s success is that it embodies what buyers love most about Toyota models: reliability, safety, and function. And it does so while looking handsome and refined, with just the right amount of ruggedness.
Indeed, these essential characteristics are enough to make any vehicle dominate the market. But there is much more to the 2020 RAV4 than meets the eye. With lots of hidden features and upgrades, the case for buying the compact SUV grows stronger with each detail.
Below, we’ll discuss some of the lesser-known features, as well as some of the most essential qualities that make the 2020 Toyota RAV4 such a stellar vehicle. And we’ll see how it stacks up against its most fierce competitors so that you can make an informed decision on which model is right for you.
DID YOU KNOW?
Now, let’s dive into some of those cool features that you may not have known about in the 2020 RAV4:
Digital Rearview Mirror
One of the coolest features of the 2020 RAV4 is its digital rearview mirror option. A camera is discreetly placed inside the back window, and a screen is embedded in the rearview mirror. By simply turning a switch at the bottom of the mirror, you can see an unobstructed view behind and to the side of the vehicle. Not only is this a neat feature, but it also increases safety, especially in times when rear visibility is obstructed from having a lot of passengers and/or cargo in the back.
Bird’s Eye View 360 Camera
The RAV4 camera system also includes the Bird’s Eye feature. This provides you with a clear picture in front, behind, and on the sides of the vehicle right there on the infotainment screen. Opt for the front and rear parking sonar, and you will be able to better navigate around potential obstacles like other vehicles, potholes, rocks, parking lot posts, signs, and so on.
Top-Notch Rearview and Overhead View Camera
These may not be quite as hidden as some of the other features, but the rearview and overhead views of the RAV4’s camera system are simply top of the class. With clear pictures on an eight-inch screen, you are well-equipped to navigate parking, backing up, and driving around other vehicles on the road without having to strain your neck or take your focus off the road ahead. Plus, there’s another awesome feature that allows you to see a simulated view of what your vehicle looks like to other drivers on the road.
JBL Sound System
JBL has long been one of the world’s leading audio equipment manufacturers. Simply put, its products offer some of the highest-quality sound you will find in any system. And you can opt for a JBL audio system in the RAV4 that comes with an 800-watt amplifier, a subwoofer, and 11 speakers in nine locations throughout the cabin.
Digital Instrument Display
There’s more impressive technology offered in the 2020 RAV4, including a hybrid digital/analog instrument cluster in front of the driver. A seven-inch digital display (or 4.2-inch, depending on the trim), shows the odometer, gear position, and other essential information, while the RPMs, fuel tank, and engine temperature are shown via analog gauges. This blend of digital and analog elements is as functional as it is aesthetically pleasing.
All-Wheel-Drive System
You can opt for Toyota’s Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD system on the 2020 RAV4. Not only can this system send 50% of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels, but it can also sense road conditions and distribute power to the left and right rear wheels accordingly for a perfect balance.
Huge Sunroof
If you want your RAV4 to feel especially open and airy, upgrade to the panoramic sunroof. This turns most of the roof into one big panoramic glass, which basically makes your RAV4 a convertible compact SUV—without the inconvenience of being an actual convertible, of course.
Eight-Inch Infotainment Screen
As previously mentioned, you can get an eight-inch infotainment screen in your RAV4. Not only is this touchscreen more sizable than many competitors, but the screen itself sits on top of the center stack, which adds appeal to the already-handsome cabin. Plus, the screen has physical shortcut buttons that make it as easy as possible to use while driving.
Class-Leading Cabin Quality
Speaking of the RAV4’s handsome cabin, it also happens to be made of the highest-quality materials that you will find in a compact SUV. And cabin ergonomics are also better than any of the RAV4’s competitors. Take one cruise in the RAV4, and it’s easy to see how much work Toyota put into making the driving experience enjoyable and safe. Along with an easy-to-use infotainment system, all other essential controls are easily identified and comfortably within reach.
The TNGA-K Platform
Toyota just started using its new TNGA-K global midsize platform for the RAV4. Until now, all RAV4s were built on the same compact platforms as the Corolla and Prius. Upping the size of the RAV4’s platform, which is also the one used for the Camry, adds a touch of aggression and makes for a better overall appearance. Plus, it’s designed to be lighter and offers a more confident driving experience.
ESSENTIAL FEATURES
The 2020 Toyota RAV4 also impresses when it comes to basic features pertaining to its performance, interior, exterior, safety, and technology:
Performance
Every RAV4 trim comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 203 horsepower (which is better than many others in its class) and 184 pound-feet of torque. This is matched with an eight-speed transmission that provides smooth and precise shifting. And while there is no turbocharged engine available, the 2.5-liter engine is well-suited for the job. Plus, if you need a little more oomph, you can throw the RAV4 into Sport mode, which will enhance throttle response and allow for the RPMs to rise a little higher before shifting gears.
Additionally, the RAV4 offers easy steering and is easy to maneuver in tight spaces. Moreover, it grips well around turns and rides smoothly on a variety of road conditions.
Interior
The interior of the 2020 RAV4 is truly something to behold, especially when compared to other vehicles in its class. Both the cloth and leather seating options are supportive and comfortable, and there’s room to comfortably fit five passengers, with impressive legroom and headroom in the front and back seats. Furthermore, the RAV4 provides 37.6 cubic feet of cargo space, which becomes 69.8 cubic feet when the back seats are folded down.

Safety
When it comes to safety, it’s hard to beat the 2020 RAV4. Along with a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), it was named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). On six of the IIHS crash tests, the RAV4 scored the highest rating of Good.
The RAV4 comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, which is a class-leading bundle of safety technologies. It includes the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, Dynamic Cruise Control, and Automatic High Beams. There are also several optional safety features, such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, reverse automatic emergency braking, and front and rear parking sensors.

RAV4 AGAINST THE COMPETITION
Compact SUVs make up one of the most popular segments among U.S. buyers, which means that competition is stiff. Let’s see how the 2020 Toyota RAV4 stacks up against some of its fiercest rivals:
Honda CR-V
Perhaps the RAV4’s biggest rival is the Honda CR-V, which is a great vehicle in its own right. The CR-V is known for providing drivers with a comfortable ride, an attractive interior, class-leading cargo space, and a ton of optional features.
On the other hand, the RAV4 also boasts an impressive interior (particularly the 2020 models), and it bests the CR-V in fuel efficiency, acceleration capabilities, and standard safety features and technologies. Both the RAV4 and CR-V are among the best compact SUVs on the market, and they both receive high marks for safety, reliability, and overall quality.
Therefore, it really comes down to what you want from your compact SUV. If interior comfort and cargo space are the most important factors to you, then the CR-V is a good option. However, many buyers find it difficult to pass up on the RAV4’s excellent fuel efficiency and more versatile options as far as off-road features and technologies go. Plus, with the RAV4, you get a vehicle that comes with Toyota’s unmatched reliability.
Mazda CX-5
The Mazda CX-5 is another one of the RAV4’s leading competitors. Also a great vehicle, the CX-5 is tailored more to consumers who are looking for a luxurious compact SUV without the luxury price tag. It also offers three different engines, including a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that’s good for 187 horses and 186 lb-ft of torque, a turbocharged version of that same engine, and a diesel engine.
Until recently, the CX-5 might have a leg up on the RAV4 in interior quality. However, Toyota has upgraded the RAV4’s interior so that it can hold its own against the competition. And the RAV4 beats the CX-5 in several categories, including fuel efficiency, reliability, ride and handling, and safety features and technologies. For the buyer who wants a well-rounded compact SUV that simply offers more, the RAV4 is a clear choice here.
Subaru Forester
Finally, the Subaru Forester is another respectable rival of the RAV4. The Forester, along with its sibling the Outback, have a sort of cult following among adventure seekers, much like the Toyota Tacoma. And there’s no getting around the fact that the Forester is a nice, modern, reliable vehicle. However, the RAV4 actually offers more in terms of adventure. It has a more impressive powertrain, it handles itself better on rougher terrain, and it even has two trim levels that are specifically designed for the road less traveled (the Adventure and TRD Off-Road).
It’s also worth noting that the RAV4 has an edge over the Forester when it comes to cabin materials and styling. And the RAV4 has many more standard safety features and technologies. While the Forester offers its fair share of features, most of them require upgrades that come with a hefty price.
Conclusion
If you were only to consider the features that follow Toyota tradition (e.g., reliability, safety, function, etc.), the 2020 Toyota RAV4 would stand out among the competition. But there’s even more to the RAV4 than those essential qualities. Consider some of the lesser-known features discussed above, and compare the RAV4 with its most formidable rivals.
Simply put, we like its chances. Now, the only thing left to do is to schedule a test drive at Mount Airy Toyota so that you can experience driving the 2020 RAV4 yourself!

It’s that time of year—time to load up the minivan and take your kids and their friends to school. Obviously, this year is much different than others because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and one result has been the disruption of everyday routines for millions of Americans. And that disruption has carried over to the beginning of the academic year.
Even though many schools have already opened and others are soon to follow, there are a lot of questions as to how each school will operate. Some students will be attending classes in person full-time, some will be navigating online learning, and others will be doing a mixture of the two. And despite excruciating planning and strategizing, school systems across the country will be winging it to a degree since no one really knows how long the pandemic will last.
But one thing is for sure: Kids who are attending school need to be able to get there. And for many families, carpooling is the preferred mode of transportation. Fortunately, there are safe ways to carpool with your kids and their friends, even during the pandemic. From taking extra precautions to enforcing basic rules of the road, here are three tips for keeping everyone in your vehicle safe when carpooling this school year:
- Follow Pandemic-Specific Guidelines
The CDC recommends “avoiding pooled rides where multiple passengers are not in the same household.” But they have also recommended specific steps that you can take if walking, biking, or riding the bus is not feasible for your family and neighbors and carpooling is the only option.
First of all, any child or parent who is sick or has had known contact with someone who has coronavirus should stay home. Also, every person riding in the vehicle should wear a face mask or face covering, and each person should have their own bottle of hand sanitizer. Furthermore, to improve your vehicle’s ventilation, lower the windows, and make sure the vehicle’s ventilation system is on non-recirculation.
Another thing to consider is whether the little passengers outside of your household are in your children’s pandemic bubble. Schools are organizing students into classroom cohorts or pods in an attempt to prevent the spread of coronavirus, and it’s best to limit who rides in your vehicle to those who are already in your children’s groups.
Moreover, whether or not you should add kids who are not family to your carpool will also depend on how many passengers you have. For example, if you have a minivan or large SUV, you could have one child ride in the second row and one in the third row. However, the more passengers you have, the harder it becomes to practice social distancing. So, consider how many kids you have riding with you before adding any others.
- Practice General Vehicle Safety for Kids
Anytime you’re driving with children in the car, it’s essential that each child uses the proper seat. If your child is using a safety seat, make sure it’s in good condition and that it is installed and fastened correctly. And don’t rush to move your child up to the next car seat; it’s essential that they use the appropriate seat for their height and weight. If you are driving around kids who are in booster seats or using only a seat belt, make sure everyone has their seat belts fastened before you move the vehicle and that they keep them on until the trip is over.
Also, never let any two children share a seatbelt. And remember that any child under 13-years-old should always sit in the backseat, which helps protect them from potential injuries caused by passenger airbags.
- Stay Focused on the Road
Finally, the parent must always practice safe driving, especially when children are in the vehicle. No matter what, remain attentive, alert, and focused on the road and the vehicles around you. Make sure any kids who ride with you have a clear understanding of the safety rules and that they stay calm in the backseat so as to prevent distractions.
And for your part, never text on your phone while driving. Not only will doing so put you and everyone with you at risk, but it will also teach dangerous habits to the children under your care.
If you need to drive your kids and their friends to school this year, it’s essential to be mindful of the steps you should take. Remember to abide by the guidelines established by the CDC as closely as you can, enforce basic rules that help keep children safe on the road, and at all costs, remain focused while driving. At Mount Airy Toyota, we are care about the well-being of our customers, which is why we are committed to following all proper precautions necessary to keep a safe and healthy atmosphere. Following tips like these can help ensure a safe carpool experience, which means that everyone wins!
The Three Models in the 2020 Tacoma TRD Lineup—Which One Is Right for You?

The 2020 Toyota Tacoma comes from a long line of successful midsize pickup trucks and has garnered a loyal following from off-road enthusiasts over the years for its superb performance and reliability, among other factors. But the popularity of the “Taco” reaches far beyond the niche of those who take the road less traveled. In fact, it’s been the best-selling truck in its class for a decade and a half.
In particular, the TRD models make the Tacoma something to talk about year after year. And 2020 sees some notable upgrades that are sure to impress those who are in the market for a midsize pickup truck. To help you determine which truck will suit your needs, let’s discuss the new features and break down the three Tacoma models in the TRD lineup—the TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro:
NEW FEATURES
Toyota has gone to great lengths to make their vehicles safer. The Toyota Safety Sense P safety package comes on all 2020 Tacoma models. This includes High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams, and Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection. There are also two cabs available across all Tacoma grades: an extended cab (Access Cab) and a four-door cab (Double Cab).
All models are now compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. Each model above the SR grade, which includes all TRD models, comes with an eight-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system.
The TRD Tacomas receive perhaps the most extensive upgrades for 2020. The TRD Sport gets a Panoramic View Monitor, LED fog lamps, chrome insert tail lights, passenger Smart Key, and 17-inch wheels. TRD Sport buyers who opt for the V6 engine will also get a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and LED/DRL headlamps are available as well. Moreover, Toyota’s specially-tuned shocks come standard on the TRD Sport.
Step up to the TRD Off-Road, and you will get all of the features mentioned above with Bilstein tuned shocks in place of the Toyota shocks. And if you go with the Double Cab configuration, you will receive the Multi-Terrain Monitor, which gives you a view of the wheels and surrounding areas.
Not surprisingly, the 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro is the cream of the crop when it comes to taking adventures on rough terrain. Along with all of the off-road features of the TRD Off-Road model, the TRD Pro includes Rigid Industries LED fog lights, sequential LED/DRL headlamps, bold black-insert tail lights, and blacked-out 16-inch wheels. The new wheels are more than four pounds lighter than the ones on the 2019 models, and the suspension on the 2020 TRD Pro has been modified to complement the lighter wheels.
Also new on the 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro are two color options: Magnetic Gray and Army Green, the latter of which is exclusive to the TRD Pro grade. Super White and Midnight Black Metallic are also available, bringing the color options to four. Furthermore, Panoramic View Monitor and Multi-Terrain Monitor are standard for the TRD Pro, as are a JBL Premium Audio System and a 10-way power-adjustable driver seat.
2020 TOYOTA TRD SPORT
Now that you’ve seen some of the new stuff offered on all of the 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD models, let’s take a more detailed look at the TRD Sport, which is consistently one of the best-selling pickup trucks in the country.
Unless you’re seeking off-road adventures, the 2020 Tacoma TRD Sport offers all the performance you could ask for. Coming standard are a sport-tuned suspension, rear-wheel-drive, and 2.7-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine. The four-cylinder is good for 160 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. Most buyers go for the optional 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque.
The TRD Sport is available with either a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission, and it can tow a maximum of 6,800 pounds. And buyers can also opt for a 4WDemand part-time four-wheel-drive system.
The interior of the 2020 TRD Sport seats up to four passengers. Though it may not include some of the luxuries offered in higher grades, the cabin of the TRD Sport makes for a comfortable ride while staying true to its rugged, sporty styling and materials that set it apart from other trucks on the market. And when it comes to legroom, there’s plenty to go around in both the front and back seats.
As far as the exterior goes, the 2020 Tacoma TRD Sport comes with an all-new grille, as well as 17-inch wheels and more chrome inserts throughout the entire body. Also, an aggressive hood scoop comes standard. Buyers who are looking for a midsize pickup that looks aggressive and sporty won’t be disappointed.
The Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport also comes with impressive technology features. Along with the eight-inch touchscreen, buyers get the Toyota Smart Key with Push Button Start, Toyota Entune 3.0 Premium Audio with Dynamic Navigation, and a Qi charging system for wireless devices. Starting at $32,745, the 2020 Tacoma TRD Sport is considered by many critics to give Tacoma drivers the most bang for their buck.
2020 TOYOTA TRD OFF-ROAD
Going a step up to the TRD Off-Road grade is likely a good move for drivers who have a taste for the dirt and hills. The 2020 Tacoma TRD Off-Road comes standard with the 3.5-liter V6 engine (278 hp and 265 lb-ft), as well as the automatic six-speed transmission, which performs efficiently and smoothly. This makes for easy passing on the highway as well as heightened performance on rough terrain. Of course, you can opt for the manual transmission, which many serious off-roaders prefer.
Also standard on the TRD Off-Road is the part-time four-wheel-drive system, a specially-tuned suspension, Bilstein shocks, and 16-inch wheels. A locking rear differential adds grip when the terrain gets challenging, and a hill-start assist feature helps prevent the truck from rolling backward on steep inclines.
Another impressive feature is Toyota’s Crawl Control; similar to cruise control, this feature allows you to program five different speeds so that you can keep the truck moving slowly and steadily around obstacles without having to worry about the pedals. Despite its stellar off-road performance, the TRD Off-Road offers a decent ride on pavement, with secure handling and body control.
Like the TRD Sport, the 2020 Tacoma TRD Off-Road’s interior is sturdy and rugged, and the cabin boasts well-made materials that will rival any competitor. However, the Off-Road grade makes it clear that you have stepped up a notch with a bright-red trim adorning the dashboard and soft plastic on the passenger side with an eye-catching crosshatch pattern.
The TRD Off-Road seats up to five passengers, and there is ample storage space throughout the cabin. Along with sizable door pockets, the truck offers plenty of storage in its glove compartment and center console, which includes several little cubbies.
2020 TOYOTA TRD PRO
When it comes to an aggressive, sleek appearance and powerful off-road performance, the 2020 Toyota TRD Pro is a midsize truck to dream about. Though it comes at a higher price, it offers the most for buyers. Here are some details to consider:
Performance
Like the Tacoma TRD Off-Road, the TRD Pro comes standard with the DOHC 24-valve Atkinson-capable 3.5-liter V6 engine. Zero to 60 mph measures at 7.3-8.1 seconds, while zero to 100 mph comes in at 21.22-22.6 seconds. The TRD Pro also comes with 16-inch wheels, Fox 2.5-inch-diameter internal bypass shocks, progressive-rate leaf springs, a TRD exhaust system, skid plates, a two-speed transfer case, and a signature snorkel that allows for better airflow to the engine when navigating deep water.
Every aspect of the 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro was designed with the trails in mind. And it shows. The Tacoma TRD Pro’s 35-degree approach angle and 9.4 inches of ground clearance outdo competitors like the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado, and vertical slopes are tackled with minimal effort. Furthermore, the six-speed automatic transmission is surprisingly responsive and smooth on the trail.
Interior
In the cabin, the TRD Pro comfortably accommodates taller drivers despite the high cabin floor that gives the truck its impressive ground clearance. Also, a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat allows you to adjust the seat height until it suits you perfectly. And the Tacoma TRD Pro boasts uber-comfortable leather seats with attractive stitching and “TRD” emblems. You will also get a moonroof standard.
Exterior
For its outer appearance, the 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro offers even more aggressiveness than its other TRD siblings. It’s distinctive exterior leaves no room for mistaking it as any other truck. This is accomplished with a large grill, flared fenders, and an upward kick in the rear window, among other features. In place of the Toyota logo is a vintage “TOYOTA” badge in the middle of the grille, and blacked-out trim, wheels, and rear-seat windows make for a mean-looking midsize pickup. The extra-beefy tires add some oomph as well.
The TRD Pro’s tailgate brings a touch of modernity with a big “TOYOTA” stamp on the bottom of the tailgate. This is balanced with a raised ride height and shorter bed, which resembles the proportions of more classic pickup trucks. And let’s not forget the slew of “TRD” logos boldly adorning the truck’s exterior.
DECIDING WHICH TRD MODEL IS RIGHT FOR YOU
When it comes to deciding between the 2020 Tacoma TRD models, it all depends on what you’re hoping to get out of your pickup truck. On the inside, all the TRD models are quite similar, though the TRD Pro offers some minor touches that set it apart. Nonetheless, performance and exterior appearance should be the deciding factors.
The TRD Sport is simply a great-looking truck, it’s really fun to drive, and many buyers find that it offers the best all-around value. It does everything you would want a sporty pickup truck to do when on normal roads, especially when equipped with the 3.5-liter V6 engine. But if you plan to take the road less taken, the TRD Off-Road or TRD PRO are the better options.
With the TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro, the wheel size drops to 16 inches, which lends itself to better performance on rough terrain. You will also get an off-road traction control system, several terrain modes, specially-tuned shocks, and a locking rear differential, among many other features designed to enhance your off-roading experience.
The TRD Off-Road is truly the middle ground of the TRD grades. Despite its name, it provides a slightly more comfortable ride on pavement than the TRD Pro. On the trails, however, the TRD Pro outperforms the TRD Off-Road in every aspect. Both of these models look mean and sleek on the outside, but the TRD Pro is unmistakably more aggressive.
Conclusion
If you’re in the market for an attractive, functional, and reliable midsize pickup, any of the 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD models will do the trick. Which model is right for you all comes down to your preferred features and the type of activity you will be using the truck for. Sheer power may not be the first thing to come to mind when you think about the Toyota Camry—until now. Sure, it’s been America’s best-selling passenger car for the past 17 years. But in general, Camrys usually sell because of their reliability, looks, well-rounded performance, and value.
Enter the 2020 Toyota Camry TRD. While still offering exceptional value, this new model puts the Camry in the conversation as a real sports car. With more aggressive looks and performance, it might reach a new market of buyers—those who are looking for a sleek sports car that’s safe, doesn’t guzzle gas, and will still run like new in 20 years.
Let’s get into some of the features offered by the 2020 Toyota Camry TRD:
Driving and Performance
The Camry TRD still provides the comfortable drive that Camry fans have grown to love. However, the modified chassis dynamics make for a midsize sedan with more precise steering and superb body control, especially around corners.
All current Camrys are based on the TNGA-K platform, which provides sufficient torsional rigidity in its own right. Add the TRD treatment of extra underbody bracing, stiffer coil springs, thicker anti-roll bars, specially-tuned shocks, and bigger front brakes, and performance goes to another level. The Camry TRD also gets 19-inch summer performance tires and reduced ride height (0.6 inches), both of which help the car stick to the road around turns.
Buyers of the Camry TRD will get a 3.5-liter V6 engine that’s good for 301 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. Toyota’s D-4S dual fuel injection is present, which means that both multiport and direct injectors are used. The engine is matched with a Direct Shift eight-speed automatic transmission.
Exterior Design
The Camry TRD’s exterior styling is, in a word, aggressive. The subtlety usually present in the family versions of the sedan is gone. Riding with a flashy, pedestal-mounted rear wing, the car rocks a body kit that emphasizes aerodynamics—complete with ground-effect rockers, dynamic front and rear fascias, a mean-looking dual exhaust, and flat-black 19-inch alloy wheels that are exclusive to the TRD. And the airfoils found on the front and back of each wheel opening add a nice touch.
More black adorns the front grille and badging and is offset by red brake calipers. Moreover, buyers who opt for the Barcelona Red Metallic paint job will get blacked-out window trim and mirror caps, along with a gloss-black roof. Simply put, the Camry TRD’s exterior looks fast. Even when parked, it’s easy to imagine it speeding down the highway.
Interior Design
The same aggressiveness is found in the Camry TRD’s interior. In place of the family-friendly features that other trims offer are aluminum race-style foot pedals, red seatbelts, and Toyota’s comfortable Softex-covered seats, which combine the trademark black leather-like material with a red-black cloth scheme. TRD logos adorn the floor mats, leather gear shifter, and seatbacks, while red stitching runs along several areas of the cabin.
The sportiness of the Camry TRD doesn’t sacrifice the comfort that drivers love about the mainstream Camry models. Though the cockpit is more driver-centric than the more traditional trims, high-quality soft-touch materials make for a cabin that feels much more upscale than the price reflects.
There is also ample headroom, legroom and cargo room throughout. Along with a 15.1 cubic-foot trunk, the Camry TRD’s back seat folds down for hauling longer items, and there is plenty of storage offered by the glovebox and center console bin, among several other compartments that hold miscellaneous items.
Safety and Technology

Even given the beefed-up performance and appearance of the 2020 Camry TRD, the sedan is still one of the safer vehicles on the market. As with all the other Camry trims, the TRD comes stocked with Toyota Safety Sense, a safety package that includes several high-tech features, including:
- Lane departure warning with gentle steering assist
- Forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection
- Automatic emergency braking
- Automatic high-beam control
- Backup camera with trajectory lines
- Three years of Toyota Safety Connect (emergency roadside assistance, automatic collision notification, and stolen vehicle locator).
In addition to the suite of safety features, buyers of the Camry TRD will get Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and Android Auto compatibility with the infotainment system. Furthermore, a seven-inch touchscreen, six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, and in-car WiFi are included.
Toyota is breaking new ground with the 2020 Camry TRD. Rather than simply being a family midsize sedan with an optional sport package, this model brings all the power and toughness that Toyota Racing Development can throw at it. So, if you’re looking for a legitimate sports car that still provides the comfort, reliability, safety, and all the other qualities Toyota is known for, then the Camry TRD could be the perfect vehicle for you.
Should You Get a 2020 RAV4 or 2020 Chevy Equinox? Here’s Some Information to Help You Decide

These days, compact SUVs have a lot more to offer than in times past. No longer do you have to sacrifice cabin space, features, and technology to get a vehicle that offers exceptional versatility and fuel economy.
While there are many vehicles to choose from in the compact SUV segment, the Toyota RAV4 and Chevrolet Equinox are two of the most popular options among consumers. And for good reason—they both have qualities that appeal to a wide range of car buyers. The RAV4 is among the top of the class in several categories and is generally acclaimed as one of the best overall compact SUVs on the market. However, the Chevrolet Equinox has its own merits and comes at a below-average starting price.
If you’re on the lookout for a compact SUV that will best serve your needs, you’ve come to the right place. Below, we’ll discuss the 2020 Toyota RAV4 and 2020 Chevrolet Equinox in more detail so that you can determine which vehicle is right for you.
COMPARISON
Let’s take a brief look at some of the primary features offered by the 2020 RAV4 and 2020 Equinox:
The RAV4
As with previous model years, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 does not disappoint. Due to Toyota’s notorious reliability and general build-quality of all its vehicles, the RAV4 comes into any comparison at an advantage. However, there’s much more to the RAV4 than reliability and build quality. For starters, it’s one of the most attractive SUVs on the market, as it demonstrates the beautiful blend of modern and classic designs that are prevalent in all the newer Toyota models.
The 2020 RAV4 is also a very comfortable vehicle. In fact, its spacious cabin comfortably fits five passengers, leaves plenty of room for cargo, and makes it easy to forget that you’re driving a compact SUV. Then there’s the impressive power that comes with any trim level you choose, and a fuel economy (30 MPG combined) that rivals anyone in its class. And if you opt for the Hybrid, you get an SUV that is even more powerful and fuel-efficient (41 MPG city).
Furthermore, each RAV4 model performs better off the pavement than most of its competitors (especially the Equinox), and its off-road ability only increases in the Adventure and TRD Pro Off-Road trims.
In general, three of the main criticisms of the 2020 Toyota RAV4 are that it can get a little noisy in the cabin, it doesn’t come with a leather upholstery option, and the upgrades cost more than some of its competitors. However, these seem like trivial matters when you consider the advantages that come with the RAV4.
The Equinox
The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is a sharp-looking SUV in its own right. Like the RAV4, it has ample space for five passengers, as well as different engines to choose from. The Equinox’s base engine is underwhelming compared to that of the RAV4’s, but buyers can opt for a 2.0-liter turbo engine that packs a punch and can tow up to 3,500 pounds.
Perhaps the most appealing aspect of the 2020 Equinox is its impressive list of driver-assistance features that come standard on all trim levels, which has earned the SUV a five-star safety rating. Also, the Equinox includes easy-to-use infotainment features, and it comes at a lower MSRP than the RAV4.
One thing to consider is that the 2020 Equinox is a little tight when it comes to cargo space, which limits the number and size of items you can take with you around town or on long trips. And its fuel economy isn’t competitive, nor is its ability to navigate rough terrain. Moreover, buyers who choose the cheaper upfront price of the Equinox will miss out on the top-notch quality and reliability of the RAV4.
MORE ON THE 2020 TOYOTA RAV4
Now that you’ve seen the 2020 Toyota RAV4 and 2020 Chevrolet Equinox side-by-side, let’s dive into some more details on the RAV4 so that you can determine whether it’s a nice fit for your lifestyle:
The Outside
While the RAV4 has been touted for its looks for several generations, the most recent versions are getting even more attention. Toyota has said bye to the soft, round look of previous RAV4 models, going instead with an overall appearance that is much more aggressive and rugged. This is accomplished by employing hard angles, bold lines, and SUV-style cladding.
What’s more, this appeal comes with the RAV4 at every trim level. And buyers of the all-new RAV4 TRD Off-Road will get an even tougher appearance, as it features black wheels, all-terrain tires, and an optional Lunar Rock body with Ice Edge Roof.
The Inside
Toyota has gone to great lengths to improve the interior of the RAV4. Using higher quality materials than in years past, the cabin prioritizes function over form, which matches it perfectly with the SUV’s exterior. However, soft materials throughout the cabin add just the right amount of comfort.
Though there is no option for leather upholstery, buyers can opt for seats wrapped in Toyota’s SofTex leatherette material, which feels convincingly like real leather. Also, the seats in the 2020
RAV4 are very comfortable, and they provide excellent thigh and back support, making for an enjoyable road trip or off-road adventure. Furthermore, the cabin provides ample legroom for passengers in the front and back.
When it comes to cargo room in a compact SUV, the RAV4 is hard to beat. With the rear seats up, there are 37.6 cubic feet of cargo volume. When the seats are folded down, that number becomes 69.8 cubic feet.
While these figures are competitive among compact SUVs, the storage compartments in the RAV4 are perhaps what’s most impressive, as they have been expertly designed to maximize space. Take, for instance, the shelf that runs along the dashboard or the wireless charging pad in front of the gearshift. And though the center console bin is not big, it is surprisingly deep when opened, leaving adequate space to store a variety of items.
The Powertrain
The 2020 RAV4’s powertrain is quite impressive. Coming standard on all trims is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. For compact SUVs
equipped with a base engine, this puts the RAV4 among the highest in horsepower ratings. Drivers will enjoy good acceleration and passing power. While there is no turbocharged engine available on the RAV4, the hybrid model puts out 219 hp.
All RAV4 models come with an automatic eight-speed transmission. The transmission shifts smoothly, and when in Sport mode, it provides a little extra snap.
It’s worth noting that the powertrain’s performance in the RAV4 is taken to the next level with the TRD Pro Off-Road trim. While it uses the same engine and transmission, the added features make for superior capability in off-road settings when compared to others in the compact SUV segment. These features include a Multi-Terrain traction system, Dynamic Torque Vectoring all-wheel-drive system, a specially-tuned suspension, 8.6-inch ground clearance, a hill descent control system, and all-terrain tires.
Driving Performance
Along with excellent powertrain performance, the RAV4 offers a driving experience to be reckoned with. It achieves secure, well-weighted steering while also providing decent feedback from the road (or rougher terrain). On most common terrains, drivers can expect a smoother and more comfortable ride than most of the RAV4’s competitors, which many people find surprising since ruggedness is part of the SUV’s charm. Moreover, the braking is responsive and reliable.
Safety
As with any vehicle, safety is of paramount importance. The RAV4 offers superior visibility with its large windows and mounted side mirrors, which allow for better sightlines of the front corners of the vehicle. When equipped with an adjustable rearview camera mirror and 360-degree surround-view camera system (which includes a perimeter-view capability), visibility is even more impressive.
No matter what trim level you choose, the RAV4 comes with Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.0—an industry-leading package of advanced driver-assistance features. Here are some of those features:
- Adaptive cruise control
- Automatic emergency braking
- Lane-departure alert with lane-keeping assist
- Forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection
Buyers can also opt for a blind-spot alert with rear-cross traffic warning.
The 2020 RAV4 received a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for its crash tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) designated it as a Top Safety Pick.
Infotainment Features
All 2020 RAV4 models come with impressive infotainment features. Included in the infotainment system is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, a 4G LTE hotspot, and a seven- or eight-inch touchscreen (depending on the model). Optional add-ons include navigation, a wireless charging pad for devices, and a JBL premium audio system. Even if you don’t get a model that comes with navigation, you can use Scout GPS Link to display your smartphone’s GPS system to the touchscreen.
Fuel Efficiency
Last but definitely not least: the 2020 RAV4 offers exceptional fuel efficiency. Front-wheel-drive models provide an estimated 35 MPG on the highway (30 MPG combined), while all-wheel-drive models fall just shy of those numbers at 33 MPG highway and 29 MPG combined. Buyers of the RAV4 Hybrid will get 38 MPG on the highway and 40 MPG combined.
MORE ON THE 2020 CHEVROLET EQUINOX
The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox also comes with decent fuel efficiency, though it’s not as impressive as that of the RAV4. Equipped with the base engine, drivers can expect 31 MPG on the highway and 28 MPG combined. Other attractive aspects of the Equinox are that it provides great handling capability, a smooth ride, an easy-to-use infotainment system, and a solid predicted reliability rating. If these are the primary features you’re looking for, and you don’t care about cargo space or quality materials in the cabin, then the Equinox isn’t a bad choice as a compact SUV.
The base model of the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox (L) comes in at $23,800. That number might be enticing to the causal consumer, but the L model is usually only available through custom order, which means that you will have to wait for it to be built. And if you go up a tier to the LS, which you can find at almost any dealer, you won’t get many more features, and the charm of the low starting price diminishes. If you decide that you want an Equinox, your best bet is to go with the LT, as it provides some nice luxuries without adding too much to the price and offers a wider variety of option packages.
The Bottom Line
The compact SUV segment is one of the most popular among consumers in this day and age. And with so many options to choose from, determining the best make and model for you can seem overwhelming.
With that said, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 and 2020 Chevrolet Equinox are two of the most popular compact SUVs on the market today. And after comparing them, the RAV4 seems to be the superior vehicle on almost every front. However, you shouldn’t take our word for it. Schedule a test drive with Mount Airy Toyota, and you can decide for yourself what you think!

A must-have for any family, the 2020 Toyota Highlander has improved safety features, a spacious interior, an upgraded Infotainment system, and a lot lot more. This celebrated family vehicle is the perfect ride for you and yours, especially for those long road trips.
If, like many of us, you are not yet ready to make the move to a minivan, but need the roominess the family van provides, look no further than the 2020 Toyota Highlander. With the Highlander, you have the choice of seven- or eight-passenger configurations. The second-row seats easily collapse and slide out of the way to make in and out traffic simpler.
The look to the new 2020 Toyota Highlander is deceiving: the exterior’s rugged, truck-like appearance shows off a little muscle and gives the idea this machine can drive through just about any terrain—which it pretty much can. But inside, there is an entirely different feel. Thick acoustic glass muffles outside sounds, while extra cushion and insulation on the floor dampen out suspension chatter. Throughout the inside, there are trays and cubbies perfectly laid out to store and hold. The front dash is covered with soft-touch materials and attractive trim. And with the Toyota Highlander’s deceptively large size, there is room for everyone in the family to stretch and play and relax.
The Interior
Seasoned crossover SUV drivers are sure to notice how well the 2020 Toyota Highlander is built. Often, crossovers can seem as though they’ve had corners cut and cheap materials used. But not the all-new Highlander. Take the seats, for instance. Each is tightly fastened to the vehicle’s frame, and each is made with quality spring and foam to create extra comfort that lasts. This is true luxury.
Precisely, the all-new Highlander stretches to a full 194.9 inches in length, is 76 inches wide, and operates on a 112.2-inch wheelbase. True for each trim level, the most space to stretch and relax is found in the front row. Here the seats are wide and are configured to hold all sorts of body types and sizes. All the seats come standard in cloth that has extra grip and strength, but there are options for synthetic or real leather upholstery in more expensive trim levels.
This year, Toyota has added heated and cooled seats to the higher trim levels, but most models come with a power passenger seat.
Safety Features
The most important aspect of family road trips is safety. And though the 2020 Toyota Highlander has not been crash-tested yet, we have high expectations in this area. As a matter of fact, if the Highlander simply keeps the same safety features from last year’s model, it will still impress drivers. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave last year’s model top safety ratings, and at Mount Airy Toyota, we feel this year’s will be even better.
So what makes the Highlander so safe? The Toyota Safety Sense P suite. This innovative safety suite comes with forward collision warning, with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning with lane departure prevention, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. That’s a lot!
The Highlander’s size makes it one of the most sought after SUVs on the market. It’s not too big that it gets in the way, and it’s not too small so that it cannot stow, pull, or haul as a sport utility vehicle should. On the road, it conserves gas, maintains an incredibly quiet ride, and its many compartments and excess space allow for premium stowage. And one of its best qualities, the Conversation Mirror, allows for the driver to see what’s taking place anywhere in the vehicle, even the very back.

For most of us, this summer’s vacation has turned into more of a staycation, which means we will find ourselves in our vehicles a lot more than usual. So why not enjoy what you are driving? The all-new, 2020 Toyota Supra is a great summer ride: it’s fast, sexy, affordable, and a great way to make your staycation feel more like a vacation.
The Toyota Supra was always destined for fame. When it was first exported to the States back in 1979 it was hit due to its notably high-performance levels production quality. Drivers were amazed at the Supra’s stylish and cool interior, the advanced technology. And even though Toyota discontinued the Supra in 1998, everyone knew it would be back.
And, well…it’s back! And what a perfect time to resurrect such a venerated and fun machine. Last year it was made official: the Supra is coming back and this time it’s even more impressive. With a six-cylinder, turbocharged engine and 335 horsepower, the new Toyota Supra is a force to be reckoned with.
The 2020 Toyota Supra is here, and it’s the car of the summer.
It’s Worth the Hype
The 2020 GR Supra is beautiful. It’s almost as fun to look at as it is to drive, and oh just wait until you get behind the wheel of this wondrous creation.
Looking over the color schemes alone makes you want to pull up a seat and gander at the car like it’s a piece of fine art. “Nocturnal,” which is a pitch-black exterior with a bright sheen and thoughtful highlights of red on the side mirrors and brakes, draws you close to the car to touch it and make sure it’s real. There’s also the “Phantom,” a gun-metal grey that highlights each curve and bending of metal as if they are brushstrokes left by the artist.
There are eleven color options in all, and each has its singular impact, making the car something unique—not only amongst its own kind but also among any other vehicle on the road.
Let’s have a closer look at the 2020 Toyota Supra:
Highlights
To reintroduce the Supra, Toyota knew they needed to go big. And they did. They began by working closely with BMW to begin production on a new racer and grand touring car. What they ended up with is a 3.0-liter, twin-turbo 16 engine. From here, the two car companies split paths, each to perfect and refine the engine as they wanted.
Toyota decided, rather than go the hard-core performance route, they would create a high-performing sport’s car that was more approachable by the public and introduce it as the new Supra, something fun and affordable and perfect for summer drives anywhere.
The Toyota Supra’s engine is powerful enough to snap your head back when you hit the peddle, but it also has the smooth ride and control of a classy sports car. 335 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque get the 2020 Supra going from zero to sixty in 4.1 seconds. Oh, and it has a top speed of 155mph, so keep an eye on the speedometer.
What helps make the Supra’s engine a high-flyer is its 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters behind the wheel, for those who prefer the control that comes with driving a manual transmission. That said, Toyota does not offer a complete manual transmission in the new Supra.
As far as control of the road, the Supra has it. The Brembos brakes with 13.7-inch 4-piston discs up front and an electronic rear differential and launch control system give it complete control over itself on rough or smooth terrain. It handles curves with ease and speed and it stops on a dime. This extreme performance all rests beautifully on four 19-inch Michelin performance-rated tires.
The Interior
Inside the 2020 Supra is a digital wonderland. There’s the JBL sound system, the wireless phone charger, an 8.8-inch high-resolution display of the Supra’s gauge pod. The car will even remind
you not to forget your phone as you arrive at your destination.
The ultra-comfortable sport seats come in leather and, along with the dash and steering wheel, are accentuated with precise stitching. Each seat is designed to hold the passenger comfortably by providing extra support for the sides, back, and hips. The driver’s seat has memory settings and both front seats have the option to come heated.
From the outside, it feels like the interior would have about as much roominess as a Porsche—that is to say not much at all, but the 2020 Supra is full of surprises. The cockpit, though compact, is quite roomy. There’s plenty of headroom, legroom, etc. You might not be able to lay out and have a nap, but you can absolutely stretch and relax and enjoy the ride.
As far as cargo space goes, it’s what you would expect. I wouldn’t plan on hauling large objects, but the 10.2 cubic feet of room goes a long way and is perfect for storing groceries, luggage, and the like.
One of the biggest highlights to the new Supra is the great gas mileage. For operating with 335 horses, the Supra rates at 24 mpg city and 31 mpg highway—not bad at all for the amount of power and weight this thing has.
Safety
As much time and effort Toyota spent on making the new Supra sporty and fun was also spent making sure it is safe.
The 2020 Supra comes packed with safety features:
- Rain-sensing windshield wipers
- Automatic high-beam headlights
- Pre-collision system with pedestrian detection and lane departure warning
- Driver Assist Package with dynamic cruise control, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alter, parking sensors, and emergency braking.
Drivers can also opt for the Premium model, which comes with quite a few extra features not offered on the standard models:
- 12-speaker JBL sound system with a 500-watt amp
- Wireless charger
- Color head-up display
- Supra Connect Communications System
- Apple CarPlay
- An 8.8-inch touchscreen (standard models come with a 6.5-inch touch screen).
Quick Breakdown:
At Mount Airy Toyota we like the 2020 Supra’s sporty look, its impressive power, handling, and braking; we like the zippiness to “sport” mode, the heated-leather sport seats that immediately put you at ease; we also really like the wireless charger, the JBL sound system, and the plethora of safety features.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the Supra’s specs:
- Engine:0-liter twin-turbo I6, 335 horsepower
- Transmission:8-speed automatic with paddles
- Weight: 3,397 pounds
- Length:5 inches
- Wheelbase:2 inches
- Cargo:2 cubic feet
- MPG:24/31, 23.4 average
- Base Price:$54,920
- Other Options: Carpet cargo mat, Driver Assist Package (dynamic radar cruise control, blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors with emergency braking)
Pricing
Starting at around $50,000, including destination fee, the Supra ends up being much less expensive than its competitors.
The Premium model begins at $54,920 (including delivery fee), and it has the option to add a carpeted cargo mat package that ends up somewhere around $56,000.
There’s also the Launch Edition is a bit fancier and comes with matte black wheels and costs $56,180—only 1,500 Launch Edition models were made.
Compare these prices vehicles with similar engines, such as the Chevy Corvette with an automatic transmission or the Jaguar F-Type or the Porsche Cayman, and you will spend anywhere from $9,000 to $20,000 more.
So now that the trees are in bloom, what could be more beautiful than a drive through Mount Airy on down to Wrightsville beach, or even the Outer Banks? The Supra is perfect for a quick, fun beach trip. Or maybe this year you are feeling the pull of the mountains instead—steep inclines and beautiful open sky. But a trip up the Blue Ridge Parkway just isn’t as fun without the opportunity to take those curves with speed. Take this scenic drive in style with the brand new Supra and let the road open up before you.

Each year, your vehicle must pass a North Carolina state inspection. Rather than just hope your vehicle passes, why not bring it to us? We’ll be sure to take care of the inspection and address any issues necessary. Here are some factors that play into your vehicle’s inspection:
- Brakes
- Tires
- Lights
- Steering and suspension
- Windshield wipers
- Horn

- Window tinting
Regularly changing the oil in your vehicle is key to the engine running smoothly for the long-term. Not only do oil changes keep your engine lubricated, but they also keep your engine components cool, both of which help to prolong the life of your engine. Moreover, regular oil changes help to remove the buildup of corrosion-causing sludge and engine-wear particles. All and all, keeping up with your oil changes will help your engine not have to work as hard, meaning it can function like it’s supposed to for longer.
The tires on any vehicle will wear unevenly over time. Generally speaking, the front tires wear on the outside edges, and the rear tires wear more evenly. By having your tires rotated and their positions changed, they will last much longer and allow for a smoother ride and safer handling. Also, regular tire rotations will prolong the life of your tires, saving you time and money in the long-term. As our technicians reposition your tires, they will also check the air pressure of each one and adjust it if necessary.
Your vehicle can’t function without a good battery; it’s that simple. Caring for your battery and replacing it periodically will reduce the likelihood of your vehicle breaking down, which can put you in an inconvenient situation at best. Of course, if you find yourself stranded, we can replace your battery and you get up and running again in no time. Furthermore, your technician will be able to inform you of how to take care of your battery and how often it should be replaced.
Needless to say, you don’t want to drive around with bad brakes. At best, brake problems result in annoying sounds. At worst, they can leave you in a dangerous situation. Whether your brakes need a shoe replacement, line replacement, master cylinder repair or replacement, bleeding, random part replacement, or any other type of service, our technicians can take care of it.
No matter how durable and reliable your Toyota is, it’s essential to keep up with regular maintenance and service. Our technicians at Mount Airy Toyota are here to provide you with excellent service, whether you have a new or used Toyota model. Be sure to contact us at (336) 786-2118 to inquire about our no-touch service and set up an appointment. We look forward to hearing from you!
The Toyota Tacoma Gets Safer, Among Other Impressive New Features in 2020

Since 1995, the Toyota Tacoma has remained a staple in the compact and midsize pickup truck markets. Sure, it has gained a cult following over the years, particularly among more adventurous buyers. But the Tacoma’s reputation reaches much further than off-road enthusiasts. In fact, it’s held a commanding lead in American sales for midsize pickups for the last 15+ years. And with 248,801 units sold, 2019 sales showed a 1.3% jump from 2018, making it the best sales year ever for the Tacoma.
So, what’s the moral of the story? Despite the efforts of numerous competitors, the Toyota Tacoma remains on top of the pickup truck world. Toyota is notorious for manufacturing the most reliable vehicles, which certainly plays a role in the Tacoma’s success. However, there’s much more to the Tacoma than durability and resale value (though those are important qualities). Along with receiving the coveted Top Safety Pick award, the 2020 model year offers buyers a number of improvements and upgrades.
Below we will discuss these changes as well as other factors that make the 2020 Toyota Tacoma the best choice for those looking for a new midsize pickup truck.
THE NEW STUFF
Perhaps the most significant upgrade provided by the 2020 Tacoma is its safety features. Now standard on all trim levels is the Toyota Safety Sense P package, which includes features like forward collision warning, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, autonomous braking, and adaptive cruise control.
The 2020 Tacoma also gets a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with power lumbar support, which comes standard on all trims except for the base SR. And when it comes to technology, there’s plenty of that, too. An all-new infotainment system comes with every model, the SR touchscreen jumps to seven inches (from 6.1), and all other trims get an eight-inch screen. Plus, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility have been added to all models.
Other tech includes two new camera systems that make driving the Tacoma easier than ever. The panoramic view monitor supplements the standard backup camera with front, side, and rear viewpoints, and the multi-terrain monitor provides drivers with visibility of the truck’s underside, reducing the likelihood of running over objects that would otherwise go unseen.
There have also been styling upgrades made to the 2020 Tacoma. This includes features like refreshed grille designs, improved daytime running lights, and new LED headlights. Also, a brighter, more efficient LED cargo bed lamp comes optional, and SR and SR5 buyers will get redesigned taillights and housings. Moreover, passive key entry now works on both of the front doors.
SAFETY
While it has long been considered a safe option for pickup drivers, the 2020 Toyota Tacoma has gotten even safer. Here are some details on its crash test results and the Safety Sense package that comes standard on all Tacoma models:
Top Safety Pick and Crash Tests
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded the 2020 Tacoma with its highly-coveted Top Safety Pick. This is a big deal. Why, you ask? Because it is one out of only three pickup trucks to earn the designation. The 2020 Tacoma Double Cab sits at the top of its class in safety when equipped with optional LED reflector headlights.
Out of the six IIHS crash tests, the 2020 Tacoma earned a “Good” rating. This includes the categories of small overlap front (driver’s side), moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints and seats. Additionally, the pickup earned a “Superior” rating for its front crash prevention system, as it avoided collisions at both 12 and 25 mph. The 2020 Tacoma received an “Acceptable” rating in the small overlap front (passenger’s side) category, which is a notoriously difficult category. Its only “Marginal” score was given to the base halogen headlights, which was offset by the “Good” rating for the optional LED headlights.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2020 Toyota Tacoma four out of five stars overall. This included four stars for the frontal crash and rollover tests and five stars for the side crash test.
More About Toyota Safety Sense
Along with the impressive crash test results, the 2020 Tacoma comes standard with Toyota’s “Safety Sense”—a class-leading safety technology package. Here are the primary features of this package:
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection — An integrated radar and camera system that helps to prevent collisions with vehicles and pedestrians in front of the driver.
- Dynamic Radar Cruise Control — An adaptive cruise control system that helps ensure you don’t get too close to the vehicle in front of you. The system consists of a radar placed behind the front Toyota badge and a camera on the windshield.
- Lane Departure Alert — An alert that happens when you veer into the next lane unintentionally, powered by a camera on the windshield.
- Automatic High Beams — Also powered by a camera on the windshield, this system automatically adjusts the level of your headlights, from high to low, by detecting the headlights and taillights of vehicles in front of you.
- Lane Tracing Assist — A new system to the Safety Sense package that marks the lines on the road, factors in the vehicles in front of you, and helps you to stay in the center of your lane.
PERFORMANCE
The 2020 Tacoma leaves nothing to be desired when it comes to performance. The base 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine provides a modest 159 horsepower and 180-lb-ft of torque, which is adequate for drivers who only need to use their truck for daily commuting and transporting smaller items. However, most Tacoma models on the road are equipped with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that’s good for 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque.
The four-cylinder engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, while buyers can opt for either an automatic or manual transmission on the V-6. Rear-wheel drive is standard on all trims, but four-wheel-drive—which is controlled by a simple knob—is optional.
Sticking with tradition, the 2020 Tacoma is built on a ladder frame that includes an independent front suspension and leaf-sprung solid rear axle. The ride on the SR and SR5 is competitive with other trucks in the class, but when it comes to going off the beaten path, the Tacoma is in a league of its own, especially when you opt for one of the TRD trims. If you’re looking for a smoother ride, consider going with the Limited trim, which is outfitted more for cruising on pavement.
THE INSIDE
Not a whole lot has changed with the Tacoma’s interior design, which isn’t much of a concern for Toyota fans. After all, the rough-and-tumble cabin of the Tacoma is part of its charm. Nonetheless,
a high-quality build and upscale materials help the 2020 Tacoma interior strike a nice balance between rugged and luxury.
The standard Access Cab Tacoma seats four people, while the Double Cab seats up to five. The Tacoma has been criticized in the past for lacking adequate legroom in the front seats, but the power-adjustable seat addresses those concerns.
As previously mentioned, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility are now standard on all models. This means that an infotainment system that was already praised for its ease of use now offers an even more seamless smartphone integration. And both the seven- and eight-inch touchscreens have class-leading graphics and large buttons. Furthermore, physical controls beside the screen provide an alternative method for quickly accessing the infotainment system.
THE OUTSIDE
For the most part, the exterior of the Tacoma remains consistent with previous models in the third generation, though a few modifications have been made. In short, there’s really no mistaking it for any other truck. A large, beefy grille, flared fenders, and Tacoma’s signature design lines across the entire body make for a tough-yet-sophisticated look.
Buyers of the TRD Pro models will get an even tougher appearance. The “TOYOTA” badge on the grille and the “TACOMA” stamp on the rear end blend vintage with modern, and the black trim and big tires add a touch of aggression. Moreover, the TRD Pro rides higher than other models; that and the shorter bed (five feet) make for an attractive proportion. The 2020 Tacoma is available in nine colors:
- Magnetic Gray
- Cement
- Silver Sky
- Midnight Black
- Super White
- Quicksand

TRIM LEVELS
There are six trim levels for the 2020 Toyota Tacoma, including the SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro. Here is a little bit of information on each trim:
The SR
Starting at $26,050 MSRP, the 2020 Toyota Tacoma SR includes cloth seats, manual-adjustable front seats, three USB ports, the updated infotainment system (and the seven-inch touchscreen), a six-speaker audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, voice recognition, and a handsome 4.2-inch instrument cluster display. Also included is the Safety Sense Package, and buyers can opt for LED lighting in the truck bed and keyless entry.
The SR5
The Tacoma SR5 offers a power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather steering wheel, and keyless entry. It also comes with fog lights, alloy wheels, and an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen. If you get a V-6 engine, you can opt for rear parking sensors and a navigation system. The price of the SR5 starts at $27,825.
The TRD Sport
The add-ons really start to stand out with the TRD Sport, which starts at $32,745. Proximity keyless entry, push-button start, navigation, leather shift knob, HD radio, and wireless device-charging highlight the list of standard features, while a surround-view monitor is available.
Buyers of the TRD Sport Access Cab can opt for a package that provides heated front seats and dual-zone climate control. If you go with the Double Cab, there’s an available package that includes those features along with a moonroof and leather seats.
The TRD Off-Road
For just a slightly higher starting price ($34,000), the TRD Off-Road adds Bilstein shocks, an updated off-road suspension, and a locking rear differential. And if you opt for four-wheel-drive and
automatic transmission, you’ll get crawl control and multi-terrain select; if your model has a manual transmission, active traction control comes standard.
The Limited
If there was a luxury trim for the 2020 Toyota Tacoma, this would be it. The Tacoma Limited starts at $38,790, and it comes stock with leather seats, rear parking sensors, a moonroof, dual-zone climate control, and a JBL premium audio system, among other features.
The TRD Pro
At a starting price of $43,960, the TRD Pro is the ultimate trim level of the 2020 Toyota Tacoma. Building on the Sport and Off-Road models, the TRD Pro adds Fox shocks, specially-tuned suspension and exhaust, a front skid plate, LED fog lights, and multi-terrain and surround-view monitors. And of course, buyers get the tough and sleek styling upgrades for the interior and exterior.

Why the Toyota 4Runner is the Old Faithful of SUVs (and What’s New for 2020)

The Toyota 4Runner really needs no introduction. Not only has the rugged midsize SUV solidified its reputation over the last 35+ years, but 2018 and ‘19 marked its best sales years to date. If you’re in the market for a tenacious SUV that seats five to seven and can go anywhere, it’s hard to beat the 4Runner.
While the 2020 4Runner is more similar to previous model years than it is different, there are a number of exciting new features that buyers are sure to love. And as much as the COVID-19 pandemic has affected how car dealerships work, Mount Airy Toyota is open and ready to deal; we’ll even deliver your vehicle to you if you order online!
To help you decide if the 2020 Toyota 4Runner is the vehicle for you, let’s take a look at those new features and cover some other impressive aspects of the midsize SUV:
New Features
Perhaps the most significant change that Toyota has made to the 2020 4Runner is that every trim comes standard with Safety Sense P, which is Toyota’s suite of driving assistance features. These features include:
- Automatic high-beams
- Adaptive cruise control
- Lane departure warning
- Pre-collision alert (with pedestrian detection)
- Autonomous braking
Also new is an 8-inch screen for the redesigned Entune infotainment system, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability and two rear USB ports. Moreover, the SR5 Premium and TRD trims come standard with push-button start and keyless entry.
Off-Road Capabilities
Besides its killer looks, the 4Runner has perhaps always been known most for its all-terrain capabilities. While the midsize SUV may not be the best option if you’re simply looking for a smooth-riding daily commuter, it can hold its own off the beaten path against a class that includes the Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Durango, and Hyundai Sante Fe Sport. Along with being a great vehicle for recreational four-wheeling, the 4Runner can tow a solid 5,000 pounds, which is bested only by the Durango.
Reliability
Reliability is another one of the 4Runner’s most luring qualities. After all, it’s made by Toyota, and it doesn’t get any more reliable than that. As far as predicted reliability goes for the 2020 4Runner specifically, it received a good rating (four out of five) from J.D. Power.
Toyota also checks all the boxes when it comes to warranties. With the 2020 4Runner, buyers get a limited warranty for three years or 36,000 miles, a powertrain warranty for five years or 60,000 miles, and—most impressively—complimentary scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,0000 miles.
Interior Versatility
The Toyota 4Runner has always been known for its versatility, and this model year is no different in that regard. Buyers get the same rugged charm throughout the cabin as in recent years, yet comfort is not compromised. The front seats provide ample support and comfort, plenty of headroom, and a clear vision of the road. This comfort extends to the roomy second row, which reclines and provides ample legroom and headroom. All and all, this makes for relaxing long-distance drives for at least five passengers.
Cargo space is another perk with the 4Runner’s interior. Behind the second row, 47.2 cubic feet becomes 90 cubic feet if you fold the seats down, and the overall shape of the SUV’s frame lends a wide-open space for cargo.
The Different Grades
Buyers have seven grades to choose from with the 2020 Toyota 4Runner: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, and Nightshade Special Edition. The base grade (SR5) has seen several upgrades in 2020, including the Safety Sense P suite, infotainment features, and other technologies. If you’re happy with the standard 4Runner but prefer synthetic leather seats and heated front seats, stepping up to the SR5 Premium is worth considering.
If off-road adventures are a priority for you, one of the TRD models might be your thing. Each comes stock with four-wheel drive capability, among many other performance upgrades, but you can opt for four-wheel drive on most of the other models as well. As far as the powertrain goes, all seven grades come with a 4.0L V6 engine matched with a five-speed transmission.
The Toyota 4Runner has a long-running legacy of being a rugged, comfortable, and reliable SUV. And with all the standard features introduced in this model year, you really can’t go wrong with any model that you choose.
