There’s no doubt about it: The American crossover segment is at war, and it has been for a while now. As the world’s leading automaker, Toyota has had some key players in this war, including the uber-successful compact RAV4 and subcompact C-HR. Seeing as how other automakers always seem to be playing catch-up, one would think that Toyota would be satisfied. It looks like they weren’t.

Enter the 2022 Corolla Cross. This mini-SUV falls right between the RAV4 and C-HR in size, and it manages to strike a beautiful balance between novelty and familiarity—both of which are qualities eagerly sought after by consumers. As we’ve come to expect from all Toyota models, the Corolla Cross promises dependability, fuel efficiency, safety, and value. It looks bold yet approachable. And it just might be the most versatile vehicle ever produced by the automaker.

Just in case you’re interested in learning more, we’ve provided some more details of the upcoming 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross:

The Novelty Factor

Toyota fans are no stranger to new model releases and drastic style upgrades to existing models. And the Cross seems to be about as natural an addition as there can be. Though it shares a platform (TNGA-C) and name with the Corolla, make no mistake—the Cross is not a variation of the Corolla sedan or hatchback. It is its own model through and through, and it offers drivers its own set of qualities and features. And it looks really good doing it too.

Though it comes in only a slightly smaller size than its bigger brother, the RAV4, the Cross has a distinct appearance. Sure, it borrows certain design aspects from the RAV4 and Corolla, especially in the interior. But from the outside, it actually resembles the mid-size Highlander more than any other model. In short, the Cross comes in a unique package while still clearly belonging to the Toyota family.

The Familiarity Factor

While distinct, the 2022 Corolla Cross has an air of familiarity to it. This is first noticed when looking at the exterior. The front end will remind you of the RAV4 and Highlander; this is intentional by Toyota, given that both of those models are fierce competitors in their segments year after year. At the same time, the Cross cannot be mistaken for any other SUV, many thanks to the uniquely shaped LED headlamps and black plastic body cladding. There’s also a bold flare where the bumpers meet the wheel arches. Moreover, the taillights resemble those of the RAV4. But opposing arrows in the beltline produce a particularly wide and mature posture.

The interior of the Corolla Cross feels wonderfully familiar as well. In essence, it borrows from the general interior of the Corolla sedan. This makes sense because the Corolla’s interior has often played a role in the sedan’s popularity (remember—it’s the best-selling passenger car of all time). Aside from the similarities in appearance, the interior of the Cross offers a similar infotainment setup, HVAC controls, storage compartments, and other features.

Furthermore, the 2022 Corolla Cross provides a familiar powertrain, fuel economy, safety ratings, and many other characteristics that we will cover in more detail later.

Competitors

No question that the Toyota Corolla Cross’s segment is one of the most competitive in the market. Along with competing with its own sibling, the C-HR, the Cross faces strong rivalries with respectable subcompact SUVs in the Mazda CX-30, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Kona, Chevrolet Trailblazer, and Kia Seltos. It will also compete against the Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Venue, and Kia Soul, though it holds a distinct advantage over these models thanks to the all-wheel-drive option. Sounds just like the kind of tough competition Toyota relishes in, doesn’t it?

Performance

Performance is a key player in the overall success of Toyota models. And it doesn’t appear that the Corolla Cross will disappoint. Let’s talk about what we expect from the upcoming SUV in terms of powertrain, ride and handling, and fuel economy:

Powertrain

Every Corolla Cross model will come with a 2.0-liter inline-four engine that’s good for 169 horsepower and roughly 150 pound-feet of torque. Maximum towing capacity is expected at 1,500 pounds. This is the same engine that is optional on newer Corolla sedan models, and it’s paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). One thing that sets the Corolla Cross apart here is that there’s a physical first gear, which enhances off-the-line performance.

You can get the Cross in either front- or all-wheel drive. AWD models can send 50% of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels for optimized traction. When this grip isn’t needed, the back wheels remain disengaged, which boosts fuel efficiency.

Ride and Handling

The 2022 Corolla Cross boasts a MacPherson strut independent front suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. With front-wheel drive, you get a torsion-beam rear suspension that includes a stabilizer bar. AWD models provide an independent multi-link rear suspension. The wheel options range from 17-inch steel to 18-inch alloy, depending on the grade. Expect a smooth ride and responsive handling from the upcoming SUV.

Fuel Economy

The front-wheel-drive Corolla Cross is in line with the segment’s top competitors at 33 mpg on the highway, and it nudges out most other subcompact SUVs at 31 mpg in the city (32 mpg combined). You can expect a slight drop in efficiency when opting for AWD, which will produce 32 mpg city and 29 mpg highway (30 mpg combined).

Interior

As previously mentioned, the interior of the all-new Toyota Corolla Cross closely resembles that of the Corolla sedan, and it has plenty to offer in terms of features and cargo space.

Design

Do you like the interior design of the Corolla sedan? You know—that signature overall look that marries simplicity, practicality, and modernity? Well, you’re going to like the interior of the Corolla Cross because all of those qualities are present. In fact, much of the cabin has been lifted straight out of the Corolla sedan.

All Corolla Cross models will seat up to five passengers. The L and LE models provide fabric upholstery, while the top-grade XLE comes with Toyota Softex synthetic leather seats. The two higher grades offer a leather-trimmed gear shifter and steering wheel.

Features

The Cross comes with either a 4.2-inch or seven-inch customizable display that sits in the analog instrument panel, depending on the grade. Power door locks, power windows, and heated side mirrors are standard on all models, while remote keyless entry, push-button start, and wireless charging come standard on the LE and XLE.

Lower Corolla Cross grades provide either single-zone automatic climate control or a manual system. The XLE comes with dual-zone automatic climate control to go with a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, and a rearview mirror that automatically dims. The steering wheel houses controls for the instrument panel, audio system, and advanced driver assistance features.

Cargo Space

The 2022 Corolla Cross shines when it comes to cargo carrying. It provides a sizeable hatch and a surprisingly accommodating cargo area; a power-opening hatch is also available. If you need even more space, you can easily fold down the 60/40 split seats.

In front-wheel-drive versions, you get 25.5 cubic feet of space behind the second row, while AWD models offer 24.3 cubes (the different rear suspensions are what make the difference). Either configuration puts the Cross near the top of its class for cargo room, being bested only by the Kia Seltos at 26.6 cubic feet.

Exterior

Though it shares similarities with the Corolla sedan, the Corolla Cross is unmistakably a crossover. It offers higher ground clearance, a higher beltline, and more of an upright stance than the sedan. And it also distinguishes itself from the RAV4 by replacing an overall truck appearance with a sleekness that resembles the Highlander or even the Venza.

LED lighting comes standard on all headlights and taillights, and the LE and XLE grades offer LED daytime running lights above the headlight cluster. The base (L) sports 17-inch steel wheels, while the LE and XLE ride on 17- and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The 2022 Corolla Cross uses the same TNGA-C platform as the Corolla sedan, Corolla hatchback, and C-HR. The Cross is 175.6 inches long, which is three inches longer than the C-HR, but it matches the C-HR with a 103.9-inch wheelbase. The Cross is clearly more suited for driving in all-weather and rough pavement situations than the C-HR, as it’s three inches taller, one inch wider, and 5.1 inches higher off the ground.

While larger overall than the C-HR, the Corolla Cross is smaller in every dimension than the RAV4. Its wheelbase is roughly two inches shorter, and it’s a couple of inches shorter overall than its bigger sibling. Moreover, the RAV4 is about an inch wider.

Safety

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross has yet to be tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). But almost all Toyota models perform well in crash tests for each of these organizations—year after year. So, it would only make sense to expect stellar safety ratings to come soon.

Like most Toyota models, every Corolla Cross version comes with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0. This suite of advanced driver assistance and safety technologies includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, and more. LE and XLE grades get rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring, while the XLE throws in rear parking assist and automatic rear braking. In other words, this subcompact SUV is as safe for the family as it is fun.

Infotainment/Connectivity

All 2022 Corolla Cross models include a seven-inch touchscreen multimedia display with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa capabilities. You can also opt for an eight-inch touchscreen. All models come with a convenient USB port in the front, while LE and XLE grades provide two USB ports as well as wireless charging.

You’ll get a six-speaker audio system unless you opt for the nine-speaker JBL package. Either way, you’ll receive a three-month trial subscription to SiriusXM radio.

Grades and Prices

The 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross offers three grades: L, LE, and XLE. As with any lineup, the higher you go, the more features you will get (such as the 18-inch alloy wheels, additional safety technologies, and extra storage space in the XLE). However, no matter which grade you choose, you’ll get modern, high-quality features with your crossover. The automaker has yet to release official pricing for the Cross models, but we expect a budget-friendly starting MSRP of about $24,000.

Conclusion

Amid an overall decline of sedans and hatchbacks, the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross couldn’t have come at a better time. Positioned right between the C-HR and RAV4, this subcompact SUV is modern yet familiar. It offers all-wheel drive across all grades, as well as a slew of standard safety technologies. It’s among the top of the class in fuel economy, and it comes with all the useful and attractive interior features you would expect from Toyota.

Trade In Your Vehicle

Will you make more money by selling your car than you would if you traded it into a dealer? All things considered, you probably won’t. There are costs involved in selling your car to a third party, and of course, it can consume a lot of your time. And as we all know, time is money!

When you compare the ease of trading in your car at a dealership with the hassle and costs of handling the process yourself, it might give you a more accurate perspective of the financial implications. And with it being a seller’s market right now, you stand an even greater chance of getting a fair price for your trade-in. Below, we’ll talk about the trade-in process in a little more detail so that you can know what to expect and make the best decision for your specific circumstances.

Perks of Trading In
When trading in your car, you won’t have to worry about investing time and money into advertising the sale, and you can save significantly on sales tax. But there are many more ways in which trading in can work in your favor:

Your transaction will be more secure.
If you sell your vehicle privately, you might have strangers coming to your house. And even if you meet potential buyers at a neutral location, you won’t be near the safety of your home. Aside from the risks to your personal safety, consider this: Bad people rip off private car sellers all the time via counterfeit bills, forged checks, and canceled PayPal transactions or wire transfers. These won’t be concerns if you trade your vehicle in at a reputable dealership.

You’ll get a new vehicle immediately.
You could sell your car the day you list it, or it could take months to sell. You’ll never know until you start the process. When you trade your car into a dealer, you can drive away in a new car on the same day.

You don’t have to detail your car.
Part of selling your car is getting it in the best shape possible. This means you will need to pay for any necessary repairs—cosmetic or mechanical. You’ll also need to pay for having your vehicle detailed and reconditioned or spend the time doing it yourself. On the other hand, a dealer is going to detail and recondition every trade-in before putting it out on the lot anyway, meaning that you don’t have to worry about it.

You’ll get a fair offer.
Seasons can impact how long it takes to sell your car and how much you get for it. For instance, if you’re trying to sell a convertible in December, you might have trouble finding a buyer to pay your asking price within your desired timeframe. And if you try selling in a high-demand time of year, you could run into heavy competition with similar vehicles on the market. Trade-in your car at a dealer, and you’ll receive a fair offer that’s not influenced by the time of year.

You don’t have to pay off your loan.
If you don’t have your car title in hand, it can be a red flag for potential buyers. Many buyers will not want to commit to taking over the car loan of a private seller. However, a trusted dealer will have no problem working with you. They will pay down the rest of your loan and factor it into the trade-in offer.

How to Trade-in Your Vehicle
Dealerships will go out of their way to make the trade-in process as easy as possible for you. All you have to do is collect some documents and a few other items. Start by getting a quote from the dealer from whom you’re interested in buying a new car. For example, you can fill out a simple form to value your trade on Mount Airy Toyota’s website, and one of our team members will quickly get back to you with a price estimate!

For a firm trade-in quote, you’ll likely need to visit the dealership for a physical inspection of your vehicle. When you take your car in, be sure to bring along your current vehicle registration, your driver’s license, and all the keys you have for the vehicle. If you own your car outright, you’ll need to bring your vehicle title, as well as your auto loan payoff and account information.

Conclusion
If you want to get rid of your old car and buy a new one, it doesn’t get any easier than trading your car in at a dealership. Along with saving you loads of time, it can even prove to be more cost-effective than trying to sell the vehicle by yourself. If you want a fair market trade-in quote and browse our wide selection of new and used Toyota models, come by Mount Airy Toyota. Our experienced team would love to work with you!

Life moves fast these days, and chances are you’re just as busy as the next person. Between work, family, and other commitments, we all have a lot on our plate. And to expect ourselves to remember everything all the time would simply be unrealistic.

That’s why most of us can say that we’ve forgotten something in our car before. Maybe it was a bottle of sunscreen or a laptop. Perhaps it was a pair of sunglasses or a container of medications. In many cases, even children or pets have been left in a car, leading to tragic consequences.
The stresses of everyday life can cause memory lapses in the most diligent and responsible of us. And with the hottest days of the year approaching, we must all be extra conscious when we leave our vehicles. Mount Airy Toyota has different strategies for remembering who and what is in our cars, general car seat safety tips for the summer, and much more.

Leaving Your Child in a Hot Car
Most parents cannot imagine that they would ever leave their child in a hot car. Nonetheless, since 1998, almost 900 children have died of Pediatric Vehicular Heatstroke (PVH). And in more than half of these incidents, the caregivers had unknowingly left the children behind.
While many would assume that only negligent or unfit parents would forget their child in a vehicle, the truth is it can happen to anyone. According to neuroscientist and UCF Tampa psychology professor David Diamond, Ph.D., forgetting a child in such a circumstance isn’t a negligence problem; it’s a memory problem.

If you think about how much our routines change during summer, this makes sense. Whether it’s because of vacations, children being out of school, or any number of other reasons, many families drastically alter their regular routines. And in each of these tragic occurrences above, such disruptions were a common contributor.

The first step of ensuring that your child stays safe this summer is to reject the mindset that it can’t happen to you. PVH has claimed the lives of children from five days old to 14 years old, and the caregivers involved have come from varying backgrounds: law enforcement officers, doctors, nurses, teachers, military officers, social workers, clergymen, and the list goes on.

From an objective review of the data, it’s clear that education and socioeconomic status have had quite little to do with these tragedies.

Prospective and Semantic Memories
Prospective and semantic memories are parts of an individual’s working memory. In short, prospective memory enables us to prepare our minds for something in the future, and semantic memory allows us to fulfill tasks on autopilot, such as driving home from work without being able to remember details of the trip.

In order to alter our routines, prospective and semantic memories must work in tandem. Take, for instance, a father who’s tasked with dropping his child off at daycare on the way to work when the mother usually does it. Or, imagine a mother who realizes that she needs to add an errand to her to-do list.

Heightened stress or distraction can cause our working memories to fail. And this can lead to disastrous consequences, such as failing to take essential safety steps that would normally be a habit. Our brains multitask, and our brains are not perfect. This means that awareness of our surroundings can easily be lost, even if we are loving and attentive parents.

Simple Strategies to Prevent PVH
Finding ways to manage your stress, getting the sleep your mind and body need, and being aware of how a change in routine affects your brain is critical to avoiding tragic hot-car incidents. Here are some other strategies that you can implement:

  • Use the front seat. While driving, keep an item of your child’s in the front passenger seat (e.g., hat, diaper bag, backpack, etc.) to remind you that your child is in the car.
  • Make a habit of looking in the backseat. Every day, keep something in the backseat that you need for work, such as your briefcase or phone so that you will have to retrieve it every time.
  • Use phone reminders. Set a reminder on your phone to confirm with your spouse or partner that they dropped off your child at daycare or school.
  • Work with your childcare provider. Promise that you will always notify the childcare provider if your child is going to be absent or tardy, and have the childcare provider pledge to let you know if your child ever fails to arrive at their normal drop-off time.

Other Summer Car Safety Tips
Children are particularly susceptible to heatstroke. Not only can the inside of cars reach deadly temperatures within 30 minutes on a 72-degree day, but children’s bodies will heat up three to five times quicker than adults. Along with following the tips above, here are some other precautions you can take to ensure your child stays safe and healthy this summer:

Buy a Car Seat Alarm
There is no substitute for taking common-sense precautions, such as never leaving your child in a hot car or and always checking the backseat before leaving a vehicle. But as we’ve seen, even the most well-intentioned parents can have forgetful moments. For an extra layer of protection, consider investing in a car seat alarm or monitor.

There are car seats that come with built-in sensors and notify caregivers when temperatures become alarming or when a child is left alone. For instance, the Cybex Eternis S SensorSafe Convertible Car Seat features a sensor clip that connects to your smartphone. If your child unbuckles their harness while the vehicle is moving, your child is left alone, or the ambient temperature in the vehicle gets too high or too low, then you will get an alert on your phone.

You can also buy an independent car seat alarm that syncs with your phone. The Elepho eClip Car Seat Alarm will attach to your child’s car seat or safety belt and senses your child’s presence by monitoring their motion or weight. The alarm can either sync with your phone or with an accompanying key fob through Bluetooth. If you leave your vehicle and walk more than 15 feet away, the sensor will detect the difference in proximity and alert you immediately. If you don’t respond to the alarm (i.e., you don’t notice it), then the eClip will notify a spouse, a friend, or another person you trust. Moreover, the sensor is designed with a thermometer that monitors the vehicle’s cabin temperature.

There’s one other type of product you can purchase that can help you prevent a nightmare scenario like PVH: a car tracker. While it’s typically used to stop car theft, the CarLock Advanced Real Time 3G Car Tracker & Alert System has a feature that will detect unusual vibrations in your vehicle. For example, if your child begins crying or thrashing around, the device will alert your phone. The system provides real-time tracking and updates every 30 seconds when your vehicle is parked.

Use Car Seats Correctly
This might sound obvious, but you should always ensure you’re using your child’s car seat the right way. Some parents may want to put a towel between their child’s swimsuit and the car seat, or underneath the car seat, after a day at the pool, for instance. But while that may help to keep your seats in good shape, it can hinder the car seat’s effectiveness during a crash. Instead, always bring along an extra set of dry clothes that you can put on your child.

Never Use Someone Else’s Car Seat
You never really know the condition of a car seat unless it’s yours. If you ever need to rent a car this summer, bring your own car seat with you. Even if the rental agency has the car seat or booster you need, you can’t be sure that the family that used it before you didn’t make any incorrect adjustments to the seat which would compromise its performance.

Prevent Heat Rash
Heat rashes are prevalent during summer. And if your child sweats while in their car seat, they can easily get a rash, especially if they’re more susceptible to heat rash in the first place due to excessive sweating or sensitive skin.
Regularly monitor your child for heat rash from their car seat. If heat rash occurs, use diaper rash cream before long car rides, contact the car seat company about sending you a car seat cover with a different fabric, and frequently wash the car seat cover.

Keep Items Secure
If you’re like most families, you drive around with lots of supplies in your vehicle, particularly when taking a long trip. Always make sure that every item in your car is secured, including toys, snacks, drink bottles, and anything else that could fly around and injure someone if you stop suddenly or crash.

Leaving Your Pet in a Hot Car
There’s a common misconception that as long as you crack the windows, it’s safe to leave your dog in the car. But thinking like that can lead to catastrophic consequences. On a 70-degree day, the inside of a car can reach 100 degrees in 20 minutes. In the peak of summer, a car can reach 140 degrees in less than an hour. A study by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) found that cracking a window does not significantly lower the temperatures inside a vehicle. In fact, such a vehicle will heat up at almost the same rate as if the windows were completely rolled up.
All dogs are prone to heatstroke by nature. Any time you drive with your dog in the car and you know that you will have to get out of the car along the way, bring another adult with you on the trip so that they can stay in the vehicle with the air conditioning running.

Items You Should Never Leave in a Hot Car
While not leaving children or pets in a hot car should definitely be at the top of your mind, there are also some inanimate objects that you should avoid leaving in your car during summer. Some products will melt, warp, or significantly change in composition in other ways. Not only can this lead to a major mess in your vehicle, but it can decrease the effectiveness of the product, if not destroy it altogether. Here are some things that you should never leave in a hot car:
· DVDs or CDs
· Electronic devices (e.g., laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc.)
· Eyeglasses or Sunglasses
· Medications
· Sunscreen
· Hairspray
· Makeup
· Food
· Soda, wine, or beer
· Crayons or markers
· Ink pens or disposable lighters

Conclusion
The hottest season of the year is here, which means it’s time to take extra precautions. Along with finding ways to reduce stress and minimize distractions in your everyday life, remember the tips above for how you can remind yourself not to leave your children or pets in a hot car. And try to avoid leaving behind the other items mentioned as well.

Most importantly, remember that none of us are above experiencing a tragic incident. Do everything you can to practice summer safety in the months ahead!

Summer Road Trip Playlist

So, you’ve decided to take a family road this summer. You’re excited to see wonderful sights, experience local foods and entertainment in different towns, and feel the breeze flowing through your car as you abandon the daily grind.

While there’s nothing like going on a great road trip, ensuring your trip provides the fun and relaxation your family is hoping for will require you to make some preparations, and that includes choosing the right travel music and servicing your vehicle beforehand. Mount Airy Toyota wants to help your family knock out these tasks so that you can set the stage for the road trip of a lifetime:

Get the Tunes Ready
There are a lot of factors that go into planning a road trip, and the music often gets overlooked. But having the perfect playlist ready can help everyone enjoy the drive more, especially if the songs are easy to sing along to.
One thing to keep in mind is that you’ll want all the songs on your playlist to be downloaded on your phone or iPod. That way, you won’t have to use data on your phone or risk not being able to play music in a dead cell zone.

Now, to the goodies. Here are some of the best songs for a summer road trip (hint: there’s a little something for everybody!):

Get Your Car Ready
Now that you have some songs to consider for your playlist, let’s talk about how you can whip your vehicle into shape for the long drive!

First of all, you need to make sure you’re secure where the rubber meets the road. Take your vehicle to a trusted mechanic, like the Mount Airy Toyota Service Center, to check your tires and replace them if necessary. If you still have plenty of tread, you may be able to get away with a rotation. Also, have your brakes checked, especially if you notice any grinding, screeching, or delayed functioning. Without having good tires and brakes, you increase your chances of an accident exponentially.

Another essential step in preparing your car for the road is to replenish all of the fluids that need it. Along with changing your engine oil and filter, fill up on transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and engine coolant. If you’ve had your battery for at least two years, get it checked by your mechanic. Batteries typically give no warning before they quit, and that’s the last thing you want happening when you’re driving in the middle of nowhere!

Finally, you’ll want to check the hoses surrounding your radiator for cracks and damage, as well as the serpentine belt. And while you’re at it, throw on a new set of windshield wipers to ensure you’re well-prepared when it rains. Work it into your trip budget to replace any parts necessary for safe driving, and handle all of these tasks before leaving to avoid being thrown a curveball on your travels.

Conclusion
Making preparations before your road trip can help your entire experience go more smoothly. Remember to take time creating a killer playlist that the whole family will enjoy, and give your car a thorough evaluation. Mount Airy Toyota can handle all of your maintenance and repair needs! Just give us a call to schedule an appointment, and we’ll get your vehicle ready for the open road! (336) 786-2118

2021 Toyota Supra

After disappearing for 21 years, the Toyota Supra made a much-anticipated comeback for the 2020 model year. To say it was well-received would be an understatement. Despite criticism from some enthusiasts about Toyota’s partnership with BMW, the 2020 GR Supra exceeded expectations. And given that it’s one of the most iconic Japanese nameplates of all time, that’s saying something.

Only a year after its introduction, the GR Supra retains the curvaceous bodywork and in-your-face styling elements that are sure to draw a crowd. But it has undergone a slew of significant changes that make the venerable sports car even more impressive than it was.

The 2021 GR Supra has dialed up the horsepower on its turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six from 335 to 382. A four-cylinder model joins the lineup, as does the special edition A91, which boasts a wealth of distinctive interior and exterior appearance items.

We’re just getting started. Summer’s right around the corner, which means it’s time to talk about sports cars. And no other car is a better fit for welcoming the rising temperatures than the 2021 GR Supra. Below, Mount Airy Toyota digs into some of the most commonly-asked questions about the modern version of the legendary coupe:

What’s the GR Supra’s Connection With BMW?

The current generation of Supra was first introduced in 2014 as the FT-1 Concept. To bring the idea to fruition, Toyota needed a partner. Thus, the GR Supra shares a platform, running gear, engine, gearbox, and many interior elements with the BMW Z4. The partnership is all about economics, as it has been with other partnerships in the past. In the end, it shows that Toyota would do anything to bring back the Supra in full glory.

The Supra remains prominent in the history of Japanese car culture, contending with models like the Nissan GT-R and Honda NSX. Toyota president Akio Toyoda, who also happens to be a sports car enthusiast, described the Supra as “an old friend that holds a special place in my heart.” So, when Toyota realized that there was a missing piece in their dreams of a Supra rebirth, it’s no surprise that it looked for ways to rectify the situation.

Here was the predicament:

The straight-six layout was one of the most crucial components of the legendary Supra. If the Supra were to reemerge, it would have to use that layout. However, Toyota doesn’t build those anymore. And taking on that task wasn’t viable. Chief Engineer Tetsuya Tada implied that reproducing the straight-six layout would require an all-new engine design plus an entire engine plant. And since BMW is one of the only carmakers that manufactures the layout, they were the best option for moving forward.

The teams from Toyota and BMW collaborated on a prototype nicknamed Fullrunner, which was essentially a 2 Series Coupe with a shortened wheelbase. The boards from each automaker drove the prototype and approved it. From that point on, each team developed their cars separately.

How Has the GR Supra Improved Since Last Year?

It was hard to see much room for improvement in the 2020 GR Supra, but Toyota somehow stepped up its game for the 2021 model year. And by the way, the world’s largest automaker has laid out an ambitious roadmap for the Supra’s development. So, we’re likely to see some significant changes with each coming year. For now, we’ll focus on the 2021 GR Supra 3.0 trim, as it arguably provides the most bang for the buck.

The B58 Engine

When the GR Supra was introduced, many performance aficionados had a problem: It ran on the same turbocharged B58 straight-six engine as the BMW Z4. Yet, the Supra only produced 335 HP and 365 pound-feet of torque, significantly less than the most potent version of the engine found in the Z4 M40i.

This problem has been resolved. The 2021 GR Supra 3.0 puts out 382 horses and 368 lb-ft of torque (matching the Z4 M40i). Plus, the 3.0-liter engine now comes with new pistons to go with a refreshed cylinder head and exhaust manifold design. You can hit peak horsepower from 5,800 rpm (an 800-rev bump from last year’s model) to 6,500 rpm, and the redline comes in at 7,000. The Supra’s 0-60 has improved from 4.1 to 3.9 seconds, and the speed is still capped at 155 mph via an electronic limiter.

The best sports cars are the ones that provide balanced performance. Yes, sheer power is essential, but it’s not enough. Toyota knows this, which is why it worked hard on ensuring the Supra’s chassis could match the engine’s increased potency.

There’s more structural rigidity on the 2021 GR Supra; the strut towers are tied to the radiator support via aluminum braces. There are new bump spots on the front and rear. And the damper tuning has received a revision. Moreover, the electronic power steering, active rear differential, and stability control are powered by upgraded software.

Behind the Wheel

Turbocharged engines are known for their lack of eagerness in the upper rpm ranges, and Toyota revised the B58 with that in mind. When driving the latest GR Supra 3.0, the changes to the beefed-up engine are instantly noticeable. On open roads, the Supra seldom feels short of breath, and it delivers impressive power in both the upper and lower rpm registers.

Another obvious quality is the powerful sound of the exhaust. Boy, is it loud and awesome, especially when you engage Sport Mode. Along with making the Supra sound like the commanding sports car that it is, the Sport button modifies several parameters, including throttle sensitivity, transmission behavior, and damper stiffness.

The 2021 GR Supra is the most sure-footed version of the nameplate yet. The handling composure is even better than last year’s model, and overall ride quality remains stellar. Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires help to keep the rear end in check around corners. All and all, thrill-seekers and daily commuters alike can drive the new Supra 3.0 with confidence. And the now-standard 8.8-inch infotainment display (up from the previous 6.5-inch screen) and Apple CarPlay integration are a nice touch.

Which GR Supra Trim is Best?

The 2021 GR Supra is available in four trim levels. Make no mistake—with any model you choose, you’ll be getting a sexy, powerful, world-class sports car. But that doesn’t mean you don’t have your needs and preferences. Let’s take a look at some key differences between the Supra trims, as well as how they stack up against a few competitors:

GR Supra 2.0

As the first-ever four-cylinder model in the lineup, the base 2021 GR Supra 2.0 gives consumers a slightly more practical option. More than 200 pounds are dropped from the car, in part thanks to the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. This model is the most fuel-efficient at 25/32 mpg city/highway, compared to the 22/20 mpg rating of the 3.0-liter straight-six. That may not be a drastic difference, but it leaves the Supra 2.0 more efficient than the base Porsche 718 Cayman Coupe (also a four-cylinder).

Fuel economy is also aided by an undertray that provides greater downforce and aerodynamic efficiency. Other standard features on the Supra 2.0 include 18-inch wheels, a rear spoiler, auto-leveling headlights, and LED taillights. Inside, drivers will enjoy the 8.8-inch LCD infotainment screen and 8.8-inch LCD gauge cluster display. This model offers plenty of standard safety technologies as well, including automatic high beams, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and automatic rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Sure, the Supra 2.0 isn’t the most powerful model in the lineup. But the four-cylinder still pushes 255 horses, which beats out other turbo-fours like the Lexus RC300 coupe and BMW 230i. Plus, the $44,000 price tag is quite attractive.

GR Supra 3.0

Dollar for dollar, the 2021 GR Supra 3.0 is hard to beat as a sports car. The 3.0-liter turbo straight-six engine offers one of the highest outputs (382 hp) in the rear-wheel-drive premium sports coupe class. The Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400 and Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 edge out the Supra 3.0 in horses, with 400 and 394, respectively. But the Supra 3.0 makes up the difference in fuel efficiency.

There’s a significant upgrade in standard fare with the GR Supra 3.0. In place of the base model’s single-piston calipers, the 3.0 gets a Brembo front brake upgrade with four-piston units. There’s also an adaptive variable suspension, engine bay chassis braces, and 13.7-inch rotors (instead of 13.0-inch rotors). The Supra 3.0 rides on 19-inch wheels and boasts brushed stainless steel exhaust tips. It also gets a 10-speaker audio system and 14-way adjustable front seats.

The GR Supra 3.0 comes in at about $52,000. The eight-cylinder versions of the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, and Ford Mustang start at lower prices, but the Supra 3.0 offers more standard performance features.

GR Supra 3.0 Premium

The GR Supra 3.0 Premium adds a decent amount of goodies to the base 3.0. It gets a color head-up display, as well as heated black leather front seats in place of the Alcantara and leather-trimmed seats found in the lower trims. A 12-speaker JBL audio system, wireless charging, and Apple CarPlay compatibility come standard. And an exterior finish exclusive to the 3.0 Premium, called “Phantom”, is available along with the six other Supra colors.

The Supra 3.0 Premium starts at around $55,000. The tech and seat upgrades, and perhaps even the exclusive exterior color, are enough to make the $3,500 increase from the standard 3.0 worth it to some drivers.

GR Supra A91

Capped at 1,000 units, the 2021 GR Supra A91 is a special edition that is an identical mechanical match to the 3.0 Premium, save the head-up display. The charm of the A91 lies in its aesthetic upgrades. The rear carbon spoiler gets a black satin finish, and in place of the lower trims’ matte black side mirrors are carbon-fiber heated mirrors that automatically fold. The A91 also offers an exclusive blue exterior color (“Refraction”), as well as “Nocturnal” black graphics. To finish, black and blue leather adorns the seats and interior. This is the perfect collector’s car, and it’s only a $305 hop from the 3.0 Premium.

The Verdict

The 2021 GR Supra is a legend reborn. But it’s even more than that—it’s a stunning sports car that offers a composed, confident, and all-out thrilling drive through and through. While there are other capable RWD sports coupes in the same price bracket, the GR Supra simply offers more standard content to go with its one-of-a-kind design and overall appeal.

All things considered, the 3.0 model remains our choice as the modern Supra most likely to become a classic. But only you know which one you were born to drive! If you would like to learn more about the 2021 GR Supra models on our lot or schedule a test drive, call Mount Airy Toyota today! (336) 786-2118.

2021 Toyota Venza in Mounr Airy

In 2015, Toyota discontinued the Venza. Now, it’s back and better than ever. Though the price doesn’t reflect it, the 2021 Venza Limited emits grandeur from the inside out. Toyota has coined the term “Elegance elevated” to sum up the reborn SUV, and we couldn’t agree more. In a segment that includes more than enough crossovers, the Venza shatters the competition in efficiency and reliability, and it holds its own in appearance, comfort, and technology.

If you’re in the market for a midsize SUV, you’ll likely check out quite a few makes and models before making your decision. We’ve done some of the work for you. Below, we’ve compared the 2021 Toyota Venza Limited with the 2021 Volvo XC90—a vehicle considered to be one of the nicest luxury SUVs available. Let’s see how the Venza stacks up:

2021 Toyota Venza Limited

The 2021 Venza Limited isn’t technically in the luxury segment, but someone forgot to tell Toyota that during the designing process. Here’s the skinny on this two-row beauty:

Performance

All Venza models are hybrids, which is something that can’t be said for any of the other automakers in the midsize SUV class. The powertrain consists of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine combined with three electric motors. Together, you get 219 horsepower.

That may not sound like a lot of power, but the Venza gives you more oomph than expected, especially considering the impressive off-the-line acceleration from the electric motors. The engine setup is matched with a continuously variable automatic transmission, and all-wheel-drive is standard. All and all, the Venza provides a smooth and even ride that would rival any luxury SUV.

Fuel Economy

No competitor comes close to the Venza when it comes to fuel efficiency. Rated at 40 mpg in the city, 37 mpg on the highway, and 39 mpg combined, the Venza even doubles many competitors.

Interior

The interior of the Venza is something to behold, particularly the Limited grade. It will comfortably seat four adults, as it offers plenty of leg- and headroom in both rows. It technically seats five people, but there’s a drivetrain hump in the floor in front of the middle seat, which may compromise comfort for a six-footer.

The cabin itself is exquisite. It’s clear that Toyota had no intentions of making the Venza Limited sporty; instead, it whispers luxury with its SofTex seats to go with soft-touch surfaces and woodlike trim on the center console. Brown piping runs along the doors and dash, which adds an upscale aesthetic.

Technology

The 2021 Venza Limited offers no shortage of the latest tech available to car buyers. Coming standard is a 12.3-inch touchscreen display to go with the Entune infotainment system and in-dash navigation. You will also get Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa connectivity, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM satellite radio.

The Venza Limited comes standard with Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.0, which is an industry-leading suite of safety technologies. A few of the many features include lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, automated braking with pedestrian detection, and adaptive cruise control.

2021 Volvo XC90

There’s no getting around the fact that the 2021 Volvo XC90 is a nice vehicle. Let’s discuss what it has to offer in terms of performance, fuel economy, interior, and technology:

Performance

Every XC90 model comes with a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine. The base Momentum pairs a 250-hp turbocharged engine with front-wheel-drive, while a 316-hp supercharged version with all-wheel-drive is available. An eight-speed automatic transmission comes with both engines.

Fuel Economy

The 2021 XC90 achieves about the same fuel economy as most of its competitors. The turbo engine provides 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway, while the supercharged version drops to 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway.

Interior

The interior is perhaps where the XC90 shines brightest. A clean, attractive design is matched with quality materials, and the three-row SUV provides seating for seven passengers unless you opt for captain’s chairs in the second row, which brings it to six passengers. A wide and boxy frame lends a considerable amount of cargo space.

Technology

All XC90 trims come standard with Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system and a nine-inch tablet like touchscreen that allows you to tap, pinch, and swipe for controls. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability is standard as well.

Like Toyota, Volvo is known for prioritizing safety in the design of its vehicles. Not surprisingly, the XC90 provides many standard safety features, including forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring.

The Bottom Line

When it comes to value, this is no competition: The 2021 Venza Limited simply offers more for the money. Starting at $39,800, the Venza Limited looks and feels like it belongs in the luxury market, and drivers won’t be missing out on comfort, technology, or safety. Also, the Venza naturally comes with unparalleled efficiency and reliability.

The XC90 is a respectable SUV with an attractive design, and it too offers plenty of safety features. If you need a larger SUV, the XC90 is a good choice, as long as you are willing to pay anywhere from $49,695 and $77,395 as a starting price.

After a six-year absence, the Toyota Venza has returned. And Mount Airy Toyota is the place to come if you want to get your hands on one. Be sure to give us a call or come by our dealership to discuss details!

2021 Toyota 4Runner in North Carolina

There’s been a lot of hype around the all-new Ford Bronco since its reveal last summer. Discontinued nearly 25 years ago, the rugged midsize SUV has been reborn for the 2021 model year. It’s a good-looking vehicle, no doubt. It has a removable roof and doors. It comes available with 35-inch tires. It offers excellent off-road capabilities. It’s novel and it’s cool.

But is the 2021 Bronco more than the hype? Is it poised to become a fierce competitor in its class? Well, there’s no better way to determine where the Bronco stands than to compare it to the most unshakable force in the midsize SUV segment. We’re talking, of course, of the venerable, ever-reliable Toyota 4Runner.

The 4Runner has been a stalwart for both off-road enthusiasts and daily commuters for decades. Superb performance, reliability, and many other factors make it hard to beat as a midsize SUV. So, what happens when the 2021 4Runner and 2021 Bronco go head-to-head? Let’s compare the two so that you can decide for yourself which vehicle deserves the most praise:

2021 TOYOTA 4RUNNER

We’ll start with the legend that is the Toyota 4Runner. Here’s some information and highlights that you can expect from the 2021 models:

The Gist

Until the emergence of the new Bronco, the 4Runner didn’t have much serious competition in terms of midsize SUVs for off-roading purposes. The Jeep Wrangler is a competitor, but as capable off the beaten path as it may be, it doesn’t measure up to the 4Runner in any other category. It’s smaller, not as practical for everyday life, and isn’t anywhere near as reliable.

Unlike many other rugged SUVs on the market, the 4Runner rides on an independent front suspension and a solid rear axle. It still runs on a 4.0-liter V6 engine that produces 270 horses and 278 pound-feet of torque, along with a five-speed transmission. Buyers can opt for rear-, front-, or all-wheel-drive. While it has been criticized for having an outdated powertrain, there’s no denying that the 4Runner provides outstanding performance, including a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds, which beats out most of the competition.

Some may say that the Toyota 4Runner is a conservative choice as an off-road vehicle. After all, it doesn’t come with some of the flashy extras offered by competitors like the Ford Bronco. But no other SUV has been more tested—and is more trusted—by active people who seek a vehicle that can get the job done either on or off the road. And as always, the 2021 4Runner gives buyers industry-leading reliability.

New for 2021

Though it hasn’t undergone a full redesign in more than a decade, Toyota has made some notable upgrades for the 2021 model year. A new exterior color called Lunar Rock is available on the TRD Pro trim; you may have first seen this pale gray-green hue on the 2019 RAV4 Adventure. Other TRD Pro upgrades include retuned shocks and newly-designed black TRD wheels that wear Nitto Terra Grappler tires. LED headlights now come standard on all 4Runner models.

Furthermore, Toyota has introduced a new trim to the 2021 4Runner lineup. The Trail Edition, of which there supposedly will only be 4,000 produced, is based on the SR5 trim. It comes with 17-inch dark gray TRD wheels and black badges on the exterior. Black seats with tan stitching and all-weather floor mats are added to the interior.

Notable Features

The 4Runner isn’t known for being the most digital or tech-savvy vehicle on the market. So, don’t expect a Tesla when you hop into the driver’s seat. That said, it offers plenty of features that enable it to maintain its stellar reputation as a killer off-road machine.

The TRD Off-Road, Venture, and TRD Pro models all come standard with Toyota’s Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select systems, which are controlled through dials on the overhead console. These models are also equipped with Toyota’s Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) system, additional skid plates, and a locking rear differential. Moreover, the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS)—which is a sway bar system that automatically disconnects and allows for more wheel travel—comes standard on the TRD Off-Road and Venture models. Fox and TRD co-branded internal bypass shock absorbers are added to the TRD Pro.

Another feature worth noting is the 4Runner’s ground clearance of 9.6-inches. Combined with its high approach and departure angles, this allows for the SUV to navigate up and over sizeable obstacles with ease. You can also expect responsive steering and brakes to help you stay safe on or off the road.

2021 FORD BRONCO

The all-new Ford Bronco definitely has some features to offer buyers. It resembles vintage Bronco models in appearance and comes with some industry-first technologies, among other qualities. Let’s dive a little deeper into what we know about this SUV:

The Gist

You may have noticed that the 2021 Ford Bronco has been marketed quite heavily since last year. It is, after all, a big deal when a classic vehicle has been discontinued for decades and then reborn. The new Bronco comes in two- and four-door configurations, both of which have a removable roof and doors. Like the 4Runner (and unlike the Wrangler), it uses an independent front suspension.

The Bronco has been built with off-roading in mind. Thus, drivers can expect a bevy of off-road features and capabilities to go with attractive retro aesthetics. However, the Bronco also includes a number of novel technologies, such as Ford’s fourth-generation infotainment system (Sync) and tons of accessories.

For all intents and purposes, it looks like Ford is positioning “Bronco” to be a subbrand of its larger lineup of vehicles. The manufacturer has announced that it will soon release the “Bronco Sport”—a lighter-duty SUV based on the Ford Escape.

New for 2021

Everything about the Bronco is new. It’s built on an updated version of Ford’s midsize truck platform, which will also be used on the next generation of Rangers. The Bronco shares a base powertrain with the Ranger, including a 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-four rated at 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Optional is a 2.7-liter EcoBoost six-cylinder engine that’s good for 310 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque; this engine can be found on the F-150 XLT as well.

A 10-speed automatic transmission pairs with both engines, but you can opt for a six-speed manual on the base model. Also available is a low crawler gear, which is designed to assist in certain off-roading situations where more wheel torque is needed.

Notable Features

There are six different trim levels for the 2021 Bronco. Off-road enthusiasts will best be served by the Black Diamond, Badlands, or Wildtrak trim. Impressive underbody protection, a locking rear differential, and low-range gearing come standard on the Black Diamond. More drive modes and other off-road features are added as you go up to the Badlands and Wildtrak trims.

As previously mentioned, all Bronco models have a removable roof and doors. You can conveniently store the doors in the cargo area, though doing so reduces room for other storage considerably. Three different tops are available: a soft top, a basic hardtop, and a high-end hardtop that offers more configurations.

There’s a fair share of safety features that come with the 2021 Bronco, and the infotainment system works with most off-road navigation services. This can prove quite useful for drivers who regularly go off the grid. Finally, there’s a “Sasquatch Pack” available that includes 17-inch beadlock-compatible wheels, 35-inch mud tires, locking front and rear- differentials, a specially-tuned Bilstein suspension, oversized fender flares, an electromechanical transfer case, and more. The package comes standard on the Wildtrak trim and above, and it’s optional on all the others.

THE BENEFITS

Both the 2021 Toyota 4Runner and 2021 Ford Bronco have plenty to offer off-road enthusiasts. Whether you’re navigating tight trails, crawling rock shelves, or experiencing almost any other kind of off-road situation, these vehicles will provide similar performances.

The Bronco may have a slight advantage when it comes to the uber-technical scenarios, thanks to its geometry and off-road hardware. Nonetheless, both models are excellent for adventure-seeking, and both can be customized however you would like. By 2022, more than 200 Bronco accessories will be launched by Ford. And since the 4Runner has been around for so long, you won’t have any problem finding a slew of aftermarket accessories to choose from.

4Runner

The Toyota 4Runner hasn’t been redesigned in 12 years, and it lacks some of the comfort technologies found in other SUVs. Besides that, there’s really nothing not to like about the 4Runner. As with other Toyota vehicles, the 2021 4Runner sits atop its class for reliability and overall quality. People who buy a 4Runner know what they’re getting: an attractive SUV that you can count on, even if that means it takes a beating for you. And by the way, there are years of data to prove how much a 4Runner will hold its value.

The 4Runner also offers less vibration, noise, and harshness in the cabin, much of which can be attributed to the fixed roof and doors. This can go a long way in making the ride more comfortable, whether you’re on your way to work or twisting through the road less taken. Moreover, it can still be difficult to get your hands on a 2021 Bronco, as they are making their way to dealers slowly. On the other hand, you can drive off in a 2021 4Runner from Mount Airy Toyota today!

Bronco

Perhaps the best part about the 2021 Ford Bronco is that it’s brand new, and it comes with all the shine and intrigue offered by novelty. Naturally, this means that it has many of the most up-to-date features you can have in an SUV, including a powerful and efficient powertrain, the latest software, and advanced off-road and safety technology.

Also, there’s no getting around the fact that the Bronco is an exceptionally attractive vehicle. Ford has managed to design a fresh, modern vehicle that incorporates styling from the original Bronco. The result is a rugged midsize SUV that offers just enough retro touches. And let’s not forget the removable roof and doors, which are pretty cool.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The 2021 Ford Bronco is one of the newest models on the market today, so it inevitably comes with a cool factor attached. But there are other reasons why the Bronco warrants excitement. It’s an attractive SUV with lots of features and configurations to satisfy any off-road enthusiast.

That said, it’s hard to deny the prowess of the 2021 Toyota 4Runner. It too provides plenty of off-road features of its own to go with a longstanding reputation for class-leading reliability, quality, and resale value. And the comfortable cabin can make for a more enjoyable driving experience from day to day.

All things considered, it seems clear that the 2021 Toyota forerunner is the better buy. If you would like to see it for yourself, don’t hesitate to contact Mount Airy Toyota to schedule a test drive, and remember to check out our wide selection of 4Runners on our website!

Toyota is Going Electric!

Electric Vehicles in Mount Airy

Though the adoption of all-electric vehicles has been rather slow over the years, forward-thinking car companies like Toyota are making the pivot to e-vehicles because they understand the only reason car drivers are tip-toeing towards the idea of driving electric is because it’s a new concept, but once the benefits to driving electric catch on, it will be a massive hit.

Over the recent years, there has been a push for car companies to create electric versions of our favorite makes and models. Why go electric? For starters, you can save a ton of money on fuel and maintenance by driving an electric vehicle. On top of that, it looks as though electric vehicles are the future of driving because they are better for the environment, much cheaper on fuel, and require much less maintenance.

Just imagine having only one thing to take care of with your car—keeping it charged. No gas, no grimy oil changes, no multi-speed transmission. Kind of difficult to imagine, isn’t it? But in due time, it will be a reality.

Anytime new technology is introduced, people become wary of it, especially when that technology is to replace something we have grown accustomed to using, like a gas-powered, oil-slugging machine. We don’t like change, even when that change is for the better.

Car manufacturers such as Toyota know change is inevitable, which is why they are gearing up to engage in the electric-vehicle phenomena. Toyota actually has plans to introduce a family of electric vehicles by 2025, with the first of them to be revealed in 2021!

Toyota’s All-Electric Crossovers

It’s true, Toyota does have plans to reveal an entire family of e-vehicles, and it’s also true that the first of those will be revealed this year. The e-TNGA ( which is aptly named after the modular architecture of the electrical system used) will be an all-electric SUV crossover. This will be Toyota’s first e-vehicle to be released in the U.S. and Toyota enthusiasts are very excited to actually touch and drive the company’s impressive new vehicle.

Unfortunately, we don’t know a lot about Toyota’s release of the new all-electric vehicles, since the car company is keeping a lot of the details about them close to the vest—for instance, the company has only released a simple silhouette of one of the vehicles.

The silhouette Toyota has let slip out to the public doesn’t give much away, except we can tell that it is the e-TNGA and that it will be a rather squatted, sleek, and cool looking vehicle. We also know that Toyota chose to use the e-TNGA framework (this framework has been used for a number of Toyota vehicles, namely hybrids) because it is so versatile. The electric crossover will have a dual motor, an all-wheel-drive powertrain, and a modular battery pack.

Toyota has big aspirations for their new line of e-vehicles, as they plan to sell 5.5 million electric vehicles every year by 2025. There’s no denying it, electric cars are here, and they are only going to become more prevalent.

Toyota has plans for an entire family or fleet of all-electric vehicles to be fully unleashed by 2025. This is the venerated car company’s first big move towards electric, but it’s no real surprise. For years, Toyota has been making and releasing all-electric transportation devices (scooters and micro-cars, mostly) in Japan. It’s clear the company has been playing with and perfecting electric motors on all sorts of levels for some time, and it’s very exciting to think about what will be coming from them in the future.

New Tech for Toyota

From the moment it began disrupting the American automobile industry in 1937 to the creation of the first mass-produced hybrid-electric vehicle in 1997, Toyota has long been known to be a company of innovation. As of 2020, it leads all other carmakers in global sales.

The innovation hasn’t stopped. Each year, Toyota offers significant upgrades to its models and consistently sets the industry standard for design, performance, safety, and comfort. And this year is no different. Among other developments, the 2021 model year brings with it cutting-edge technologies to help you stay connected to others on the road, as well as improvements on an already-groundbreaking suite of safety features. Below, we’ll discuss these upgrades in more detail and provide a brief rundown of available upgrades for a few of the leading Toyota models.

ENTUNE INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM

Every new Toyota model comes standard with the manufacturer’s Entune infotainment system. This system only adds to the functionality, safety, and comfort that has been provided by Toyota vehicles for decades. In terms of infotainment interfaces, it doesn’t get easier to use and navigate than Entune, and it’s perhaps the most efficient interface on the market.

Entune 3.0

It was hard to imagine the previous version of Entune getting much better. But here are we are, and it is. The latest version of Toyota’s infotainment system comes with several notable upgrades. A remote connect feature allows you to view engine diagnostics, lock and unlock your doors, start your engine, and track down your vehicle in a parking lot—all on your smartphone, from wherever you may be.

Entune 3.0 also comes with Verizon’s 4G LTA Wi-Fi connection, which means that you can stay connected pretty much anywhere you go without eating up your data plan. And navigation has been taken up a notch. When you opt for the Entune 3.0 Premium Audio Suite, you’ll get Dynamic Navigation, which shows you up-to-the-minute navigation and points of interest on your journey. Even better, the navigation system runs on a hard drive so that you don’t have to use your phone’s data.

Unsurprisingly, the newest version of Entune still comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth capabilities, among a slew of other tech features.

Entune Audio and Audio Plus

Entune Audio comes on most Toyota models, and it includes a couple of notable features. For instance, it provides efficient Bluetooth connectivity, which allows you to talk on your phone, stream music and podcasts, and much more without using your hands. And if you have an iPhone, you can use Siri to perform a variety of functions, just like you would from your phone.

The available Entune Audio Plus includes the features mentioned above and adds a few more. You’ll get access to Scout GPS Link, which is an app that provides simple, accurate turn-by-turn directions. It even shows real-time updates for traffic, cloud movement, and more! Entune Audio Plus also comes with the option for HD Radio—a feature that boosts the sound quality of any audio you play. Furthermore, a free three-month trial of SiriusXM radio is automatically included when you upgrade to Entune Audio Plus.

Entune App Suite

Last but not least, the Entune App Suite is your go-to platform for a wide array of helpful apps. Do you want to listen to your favorite station on Pandora or to a new album on Apple Music? What about that weekly podcast you’ve been waiting on? Or, perhaps you need to make dinner reservations or compare gas prices? Entune App Suite has everything you need.

TOYOTA+ALEXA APP

If you’re an Amazon Alexa customer, you likely know a little bit about what she can do. The latest version of Alexa can perform tens of thousands of functions, and with the Toyota+Alexa app, you get access to all of those services and skills right there in your vehicle.

SAFETY SENSE 2.5 PLUS

Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) is just one example of how the manufacturer has proven to remain a pioneer in today’s auto industry. The innovative suite of standard safety technologies has garnered award after award, and the 2021 Camry is equipped with the latest version: Safety Sense 2.5 Plus. Other Toyota models are expected to receive the upgrade in the coming months and years.

The focal point of the development of TSS 2.5+ was to mitigate frontal collisions, nighttime mishaps, and unwanted lane departures. As with previous versions of TSS, it’s all about using forward-thinking tech to prevent as many accidents as possible. TSS 2.5+ is by far the most

advanced and sophisticated safety suite on the market, and it integrates cameras, radars, and an uber-powerful computer to get the job done.

Carryover Features

The Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection and Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control remain two of the primary technologies in the latest TSS suite. The former warns you of a potential collision with the vehicle in front of you, alerts you when there is a pedestrian within range, and implements automatic emergency braking when your vehicle is too close for comfort. The latter is Toyota’s adaptive cruise control, which adjusts your vehicle’s speed depending on surrounding vehicles (if you’re coming up hot on the car in front of you, it will automatically reduce your speed).

Other technologies that carry over from previous TSS versions include automatic high beams, road sign assistance, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assistance, and lane-centering assistance.

Enhanced Features

Though the forward collision warning and automatic braking of older TSS suites are remarkable in their ability to prevent accidents, TSS 2.5+ takes these technologies up a notch. In short, the system is more proactive and functional. Along with sensing vehicles ahead, it now detects preceding pedestrians and cyclists, whether it’s sunny or dark outside. If there is a vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist making a left turn in front of you, the updated feature will alert you through sound and visuals. If necessary, the automatic braking will kick in.

Moreover, the adaptive cruise control technology in TSS 2.5+ offers a brand-new function that makes passing slower vehicles easier and safer. After slowing down while using adaptive cruise control, there is typically a significant delay before the vehicle starts accelerating again. TSS 2.5+ gets rid of this problem.

The revamped Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control senses when you are coming up on a slower vehicle, and when you turn on your indicator and engage the steering wheel, the system automatically accelerates your vehicle. This puts you in a better position to pass the vehicle in front of you. The adaptive cruise control feature will then keep accelerating until you hit your established cruising speed.

TECH UPGRADES BY MODEL

We’ve covered some of the newest tech available from Toyota, but not every model will get all the same features. So, let’s touch on what you can expect from a few of the big hitters in the manufacturer’s 2021 lineup:

Camry

The 2021 Camry is one of Toyota’s most decked-out vehicles when it comes to technology. The Entune infotainment system is displayed on either a seven- or nine-inch touchscreen that floats gracefully on the dashboard. The Camry is also the first model to feature TSS 2.5+ (though others are soon to follow).

Another notable feature is the Dynamic Torque Control AWD system, which comes in the North America-only Camry AWD. This system is matched with a high-efficiency 2.5-liter Dynamic Force engine (four-cylinder) and an eight-speed Direct-Shift automatic transmission.

Corolla

This year, buyers can opt for an eight-inch touchscreen for their Entune 3.0 system in the Corolla. There are several hard buttons around the large touchscreen, as well as rotary volume and tuning knobs, for easy and safe controlling while on the road. You can also opt for wireless charging and a premium JBL sound system. As of now, the 2021 Corolla comes with Safety Sense 2.0, including the pre-collision system, road sign assistance, and lane departure warning with steering assistance.

Prius

Anyone who has ever seen a Prius knows that it revolves around technology. It is, in fact, one of the vehicles that have strengthened Toyota’s reputation for being innovative. One hallmark feature that remains is the digital gauge panel mounted on the center of the dashboard, which includes two 4.2-inch full-color display screens and allows drivers to customize the wealth of content they see by using their steering wheel controls.

On the Prius Prime, buyers will get a seven-inch touchscreen to facilitate Entune 3.0 unless they upgrade to the 11.6-inch vertical screen that comes in the XLE trim. The 2021 Prius Prime is available with Safety Sense 2.0.

4Runner

Yes, even the rugged 4Runner comes with some impressive tech! All 2021 models feature Entune 3.0 and an eight-inch touchscreen. Of course, you get the physical buttons and rotary knobs to go with the infotainment interface, and you can opt for built-in navigation and a 15-speaker JBL sound system. Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P), which is a suite of active safety systems, comes on each 2021 4Runner. Also included is the Star Safety System, which provides traction control, vehicle stability control, Smart Stop Technologies (SST), and more.

Rav4

The RAV4 is a little sibling to the 4Runner. And although it proves capable off the beaten path, it features more modern, polished styling and is more tech-focused. A seven-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard on the 2021 RAV4, and an eight-inch screen is available.

As in the other Toyota models, the Entune 3.0 system provides a 4G LTE mobile hotspot and capabilities for Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. The premium JBL sound system is available as well, as are enhanced navigation and a wireless charging pad. Even if you don’t choose a model with built-in navigation, you can use the Scout GPS Link app to display your smartphone’s map and directions on the touchscreen. TSS 2.0 comes standard on all 2021 RAV4 models, making it one of the safest compact SUVs on the road.

CONCLUSION

Toyota has long been known to produce vehicles that stand the test of time without shying away from technology. In fact, it remains a pioneer in innovative tech that helps drivers stay connected and improves performance, safety, and comfort. The model year 2021 sees a number of significant upgrades across the Toyota lineup, including the Entune infotainment system, Toyota+Alexa app, and Safety Sense technologies.

Overlanding has been a thing for quite some time now. But seeing as we are still in a global pandemic and flying is not the ideal form of travel, more and more people are seeking adventure in other ways. TruckHouse has capitalized on this trend by creating the BCT. The TruckHouse BCT is essentially a luxury camper truck. Drivers and passengers can take extended trips across the country, hit the beaten path, and live off the grid without sacrificing comfort.

This vehicle continues what the 1980s Toyota Sunradar started. If you can imagine a miniaturized RV falling onto the cargo bed of a 2021 Toyota Tacoma, you’ll have a pretty good idea of what the BCT looks like. Yet, the design is remarkable, and it doesn’t give off a hodgepodge appearance.

Does it come at a cost? You bet it does. Customers should expect to pay anywhere from $285,000 to $380,000 for the transformed Tacoma. But just wait until you see how awesome the BCT is. Below, we’ll talk about the primary features, some of the best adventure trips you can take in the United States, and more.

Main Features

Let’s start with the truck. There are three “stages” available for the BCT: One, Two, and Three. You can get Stages One and Two with a Tacoma TRD Access Cab or TRD Sport. For Stage One, TruckHouse puts on a new rear bumper, a reinforced chassis, long-travel suspension, a specially fabricated rear axle, and 33-inch tires. Stage Two adds 35-inch tires and builds on Stage One from there with a modified front bumper, drilled and slotted disc brakes, extended-range fuel tank, a snorkel, an air compressor, and a front winch.

The features really beef up for Stage Three, for which you need a TRD Pro. Special front and rear differentials, an upgraded long-travel suspension kit, ultra-tough front and rear winches, and auxiliary lights are added.

Now, for the single-piece carbon fiber reinforced composite house, which is not your average camper. It looks sleek, and it seamlessly fits onto the Tacoma body. The house offers an automatic awning, seven dual-pane safari-style windows, a three-point locking entry door, an electric entry step, multi-access gear storage, a torsion-free mounting system, and a 10-speaker soundbar, among other features.

The interior of the camper doesn’t leave much to be desired either. Sleeping accommodations for four adults (including a queen-sized bed), a bathroom with shower and toilet, and a full galley come standard. You can also opt for a 32-inch LED TV, heated floor, 12v air conditioning, heating, Wi-Fi, upgraded insulation, two captain’s chairs, and Bosch appliances (including an oven and a marine-grade refrigerator and freezer). In other words, it has everything you need for a glamping adventure.

Behind the Creation

As previously mentioned, the TruckHouse camper fits the Tacoma body perfectly. That may be because TruckHouse spent more than 1,000 hours on blending the camper with the Tacoma’s proportions, body lines, and utility. Describing the design process, COO and co-founder Nicolo Monforte said: “We started by breaking down what the perfect overland camping experience was to us, and from there we built the most capable and livable vehicle we could imagine.” He has also stated that the Tacoma was chosen as the foundation of the BCT for its “modest size, maneuverability, and proven longevity.”

Adventure Trip Ideas

Whether you determine to invest in the BCT or you simply want to continue daydreaming about what could be, here are a few of the top locations for adventure tripping in the US:

Grand Canyon. Perhaps America’s most famous natural landmark, the Grand Canyon is simply majestic. Along with breathtaking views from countless angles, this spot provides lots of opportunities for hiking, whitewater rafting, and many other activities.

Yosemite. This is a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts, and it also offers grandiose scenery. Visit Yosemite National Park, and you’ll find plenty of opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and biking.

Yellowstone. If hiking is one of your favorite pastimes, Yellowstone National Park may be the cream of the crop. Splendid mountains, canyons, meadows, geysers, and waterfalls stretch over 3,000 square miles, and you’re sure to see bears, buffalo, elk, and other wildlife on your adventures.

Adirondacks. Moving east, the Adirondacks in upstate New York provides adventurers with stunning scenery and opportunities for thrilling activities. Skiing, bobsledding, canoeing, and fishing are some of the most popular activities enjoyed in this mountainous area, which stretches over six-million acres.

The TruckHouse BCT is expensive. But boy is it amazing. If you’re looking for the ultimate adventure vehicle for exploring the US, then it doesn’t get any better. Just keep researching all the different trips you could take, and let your imagination run wild with what you could do with the specimen that is the TruckHouse BCT!
