Toyota maintenance tips

At Mount Airy Toyota, we believe car ownership should be empowering—not confusing. That’s why we created the Insider Tips Series, a collection of straightforward tutorials and proven advice on everything from car buying to maintenance, ownership, and service. Each episode takes a practical look at real-world driving challenges and offers expert guidance that helps you save money, avoid costly mistakes, and get more out of your Toyota.

To kick off the series, we’re highlighting two important topics: how mountain driving affects your car and the hidden features built into Toyotas that many drivers never use.

Mountain Driving: What Wears Out First

Driving in the North Carolina mountains is a unique experience. The steep climbs, sharp descents, and winding roads don’t just challenge drivers—they also put extra stress on vehicles. In one of our first videos, Mount Airy Toyota Certified Technician Chris Pack explains that tires, brakes, and fuel consumption take the biggest hit when you drive in the mountains.

The truth about mountain driving.

Tires

The constant uphill climbs and downhill braking cause tires to wear out faster than on flat terrain. Mountain drivers often find themselves replacing tires sooner than expected, making regular inspections essential. Keeping an eye on tire tread and alignment can prevent uneven wear and extend the life of your tires.

$$$ SAVINGS TIP – Keep your Toyota driving safely with a fresh set of tires—and save big while you do it! Watch our website and social media for the Mount Airy Toyota Tire Sales.  We often advertise buy three tires and get the fourth tire FREE.

  • Expert Toyota Certified installation
  • Tires matched for your model and driving needs
  • Boost safety, performance, and fuel efficiency

Brakes

Brakes are one of the most important—and most overlooked—parts of mountain driving. Frequent downhill braking generates more heat and friction, which can wear out pads and rotors at a much faster rate. Getting your brakes serviced on time doesn’t just improve safety; it also saves money. When brake pads are replaced before they wear down completely, you avoid damaging rotors and calipers, which can lead to costly repairs. In other words, preventative service now means avoiding major expenses later.

Fuel Efficiency

Steeper terrain requires more power, which means more fuel. While there’s no way around the physics of climbing mountains, keeping your tires properly inflated, maintaining a clean air filter, and following regular service intervals can help maximize your fuel economy.

The takeaway is simple: regular maintenance is not optional—it’s essential. Staying ahead of tire and brake service not only keeps you safe on mountain roads but also protects your wallet from unexpected repair bills.

Hidden Features: Getting the Most From Your Toyota

Our second video in the series dives into something many drivers overlook: the hidden features built into their Toyotas. These features are designed to make daily driving easier and more convenient, but too often, owners never use them.

Key Fob Technology

Your Toyota key fob is more than just a way to lock and unlock your car. Depending on your model, it can roll down your windows, open the trunk remotely, and even activate a panic alarm with specific button combinations. These functions can save time, add convenience, and improve safety, yet many Toyota owners never take advantage of them.

Watch this video by Mount Airy Toyota Certified Tech, Chris Pack to learn about your Key Fob.

Additional Features Drivers Forget

  • Automatic High Beams – Many Toyota models include this feature, which automatically switches between high and low beams to improve nighttime driving safety.
  • Eco and Sport Driving Modes – These selectable modes adjust throttle response and fuel efficiency. Eco mode helps save gas, while Sport mode sharpens performance for a more responsive drive.
  • Rear Seat Reminder – Designed to alert you to check the back seat before leaving the vehicle, this safety feature helps prevent accidents and forgotten belongings.
  • Toyota Safety Sense Alerts – From lane departure warnings to adaptive cruise control, Toyota’s safety systems have customizable settings that many owners never personalize. Taking the time to adjust them can improve your driving comfort and confidence.

By exploring these hidden features, our goal is to help you get the most out of your vehicle. After all, you invested in Toyota quality—you deserve to enjoy every feature it offers.

Why This Series Matters

Between car buying myths, confusing service schedules, and overlooked technology, drivers face a lot of uncertainty. Our Insider Tips Series was created to clear up that confusion. We want to provide:

  • Clarity – Cutting through myths with honest, straightforward answers.
  • Confidence – Helping you understand your vehicle so you can make informed decisions.

Battery Information from Mount Airy Toyota

It happens every year about this time.  We get a rush of customers with battery issues because of the rapid rise in temperature.  It catches people off guard in Mount Airy because we’re used to the extreme cold weather, but never quite as prepared for the heat of summer.  To help our customers be more prepared we’ve provided information, special cost savings on batter installation, and tips from our expert mechanics.

Insider Tips on Low Batter Issues from a Master Mechanic

Dead Battery? Here’s What You Need to Know (Before It Happens to You)

We’ve all experienced that sinking feeling when you hop in your car, press the start button or turn the key, and nothing happens. No engine noise, no dashboard lights, no response at all. A dead battery can leave you stranded at the worst possible moment, whether you’re heading to work, picking up the kids, or preparing for a road trip.

Fortunately, a little knowledge goes a long way. Understanding how your car battery works, recognizing the warning signs, and knowing what to do in an emergency can help you avoid unnecessary stress. In this guide, we’ll break down everything you need to know about your vehicle’s battery so you can stay powered up and prepared for the road ahead.

What Exactly Does Your Car Battery Do?

Your car’s battery is much more than a simple power source. It plays a vital role in the operation of your vehicle from the moment you turn it on.

At its core, the battery provides the jolt of electricity needed to start your engine. Without it, your car simply won’t run. Once the engine is started, the alternator takes over to generate electricity and recharge the battery—but that initial burst is critical.

In addition to helping your vehicle start, the battery powers all of your electronic components when the engine is off. These components include:

  • Interior and exterior lights
  • Power windows and locks
  • Infotainment systems and radios
  • Climate control systems
  • USB chargers and other accessories

If your battery is weak or dying, any of these systems may become sluggish, glitchy, or stop working altogether.

What To Do If Your Battery Dies

If you find yourself with a car that won’t start, there’s a good chance your battery is to blame. But don’t panic, there are a couple of reliable methods to get back on the road.  If you’re near Mount Airy Toyota, give us a call or schedule service.  We’re ready to help!

1. Try a Jump Start

Jump-starting is one of the most common and immediate solutions when dealing with a dead battery. You’ll need a pair of jumper cables and another vehicle with a fully charged battery.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Position the vehicles: Park the working car close enough to the dead car so the cables can reach, but make sure the vehicles are not touching.
  2. Turn off both engines and remove the keys.
  3. Connect the cables in the following order:
  • Red clamp to the positive terminal (+) on the dead battery.
  • Red clamp to the positive terminal (+) on the working battery.
  • Black clamp to the negative terminal (–) on the working battery.
  • Black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the engine block or chassis of the dead car (not the battery).
  1. Start the working car and let it run for a few minutes.
  2. Try starting the dead vehicle.

Safety Tip: If you’re unsure of where the battery terminals are or how to properly connect the cables, consult your owner’s manual or call a professional. Incorrect connections can cause sparks, damage to the battery, or even injury.

Summer heat means dead batteries. Get yours checked.

2. Use a Portable Battery Jump Starter

A more modern solution is the portable battery jump starter, often called a “jump box.” These compact, rechargeable devices are a must-have for emergency preparedness.

Unlike jumper cables, a jump starter doesn’t require a second vehicle. Simply connect the clamps to your battery, turn it on, and start your car. Many models feature automatic polarity detection, spark-proof technology, and built-in safety alarms, making them very user-friendly.

Some jump starters also double as:

  • USB phone chargers
  • Flashlights
  • Tire inflators or air compressors

If you travel frequently, live in a remote area, or simply want peace of mind, a jump starter is a smart investment.

Why You Should Check Your Battery Regularly

Like any other part of your vehicle, car batteries don’t last forever. On average, a battery will last between 3 to 5 years, depending on usage, weather conditions, and maintenance habits.

Extreme heat and cold are especially hard on batteries. In hot weather, internal fluids evaporate faster, leading to corrosion and reduced performance. In freezing temperatures, a battery’s ability to hold a charge can drop significantly.

That’s why routine battery checks should be part of your regular vehicle maintenance plan. At Mount Airy Toyota, our technicians can test your battery in just a few minutes during any scheduled service and, if the battery needs replacing, we can have it done in around 15-20 minutes.

We check:

  • Voltage – Is your battery fully charged?
  • Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) – Can it deliver the power needed to start the car in cold conditions?
  • Overall health – Is your battery near the end of its useful life?

Pro Tip: Identifying a weak battery before it fails can save you the cost and inconvenience of a tow truck or emergency repair.

What Happens If You Don’t Replace a Weak Battery?

Ignoring the warning signs of a failing battery might seem harmless at first, until your car refuses to start when you need it most. A dying battery can cause a variety of problems beyond just an inconvenient breakdown.

Here’s what you risk by waiting too long:

  • Car won’t start – Often at the worst possible moment (late at night, in bad weather, far from home).
  • Strain on the alternator – The alternator may work overtime to compensate, potentially shortening its lifespan.
  • Malfunctioning electronics – Lights, radios, navigation systems, and other electronics may start acting erratically.
  • Roadside assistance costs – Towing, jump-starts, or emergency service calls can get expensive fast.

Prevention is always cheaper and easier than an emergency.

Signs Your Battery Might Be Failing

Car batteries usually don’t die suddenly. In most cases, they provide warning signs days or even weeks in advance. Recognizing these early symptoms can help you take action before you get stranded.

Common Signs of Battery Trouble:

  • Slow engine crank – The engine takes longer than usual to turn over.
  • Dim headlights – Especially noticeable when idling or using multiple electronics.
  • Clicking noise – A rapid clicking sound when you turn the key or press the start button.
  • Dashboard warning lights – Battery or check engine lights may flash intermittently.
  • Electrical issues – Infotainment system resets, malfunctioning power windows or locks.
  • Corrosion – White or blue powder around the battery terminals is a sign of acid leakage.
  • Swollen battery case – This can be caused by overcharging or extreme temperatures.

If you notice any of these, it’s time to have your battery inspected by a professional.

Pro Tips to Make Your Battery Last Longer

While you can’t control everything, good maintenance habits can significantly extend your battery’s lifespan.

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your car battery:

  • Drive regularly: Short trips or long periods of inactivity can drain your battery. Try to drive your car at least once a week.
  • Turn off electronics: Before shutting off the engine, turn off lights, radio, and climate control to reduce drain.
  • Clean battery terminals: Dirt and corrosion can prevent proper current flow. Use a wire brush and baking soda solution for cleaning.
  • Tighten loose connections: Make sure the cables and terminals are snug and secure.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures: Park in a garage or shaded area when possible. Extreme heat and cold are tough on battery cells.
  • Disconnect when storing: If you’re storing your vehicle for a long time, consider disconnecting the battery or using a trickle charger.

Final Thoughts: Stay Charged, Stay Confident

Your car’s battery might not be something you think about often—but when it fails, you’ll notice immediately. That’s why staying proactive is so important. A simple battery check today could prevent a major inconvenience tomorrow.

Whether you’re gearing up for a summer road trip or just commuting to work, take a few minutes to ensure your vehicle is ready to roll. Don’t wait for warning signs or bad weather to catch you off guard.

How ChatGPT Can Help You Get the Best Trade-In Value

At Mount Airy Toyota, we’re proud to say we have some of the best trade and finance managers in the business. Our team of auto buyers is honest, experienced, and incredibly sharp — and they do their best to give every customer a fair and accurate trade-in value. But let’s be honest: it’s a tough job.

Most of the time, they’re working with just a few quick forms and maybe a photo or two of your vehicle. That’s not a lot to go on! So, what if you could help them — and help yourself — by walking in with a clearer idea of what your vehicle might actually be worth?

That’s where ChatGPT can come in handy.

Using AI to Prep for Your Trade-In

ChatGPT is an Artificial Intelligence Tool that can help you gather all the right information that goes into calculating your car’s trade-in value. The more context you give it, the better it can guide you toward a realistic number — even before you set foot in the dealership.

Here are some helpful questions and factors you can plug into ChatGPT to get a smarter, more customized idea of your car’s value:

Vehicle Condition & History

  1. What’s the exact year, make, model, and trim?
Trim levels matter — an LE and a Limited can have very different values.
  2. How many miles are on it?
Mileage is one of the biggest value factors. Even “low miles” means different things depending on age.
  3. Have there been any accidents?
Yep, even minor dings count. Transparency helps get a fair trade-in estimate.
  4. Any dents or scratches?
Be honest — normal wear is expected, but big scratches or panel damage should be mentioned.
  5. How’s the paint looking?
Fading, oxidation, or peeling? Or is it still shiny and showroom-fresh?
  6. Are there any warning lights on?
That orange triangle or red exclamation point is something you don’t want to ignore.
  7. Is the check engine light on?
It might be nothing — or something — but definitely worth disclosing.
  8. Are all systems working?
We’re talking about the AC, power windows, radio, heated seats, cruise control, and beyond.
  9. Any leaks under the car?
Oil, coolant, or anything else dripping? That could impact value or you may need to top it off before you visit the dealership.
  10. How are the brakes and suspension?
Smooth stopping and a comfy ride are good signs. Squeaks or rattles? Not so much.
  11. Any weird noises when you drive?
Squealing, grinding, knocking — anything strange should be shared upfront.
  12. Any active recalls?
If there are outstanding recalls, they can affect the resale offer — and safety, too.
  13. Any history of flooding or water damage?
Flood-damaged cars lose a lot of value — and it’s something dealers check for.

Interior Condition

  1. How do the seats and upholstery look?
Are they spotless or stained, torn, or sun-faded?
  2. Does it have any lingering smells?
Smoke, mildew, food, pets — odors can seriously impact value.
  3. Has anyone smoked in it?
Smoke is tough to get out and worth mentioning.
  4. Got kids?
We love ‘em, but they’re tough on cars. Sticky fingers, melted crayons, ketchup stains and snack crumbs leave their mark.
  5. Any pets ride along?
Hair, scratches, or that unmistakable “dog car” smell — be honest!
  6. Do the seatbelts and airbags work?
Safety equipment needs to be in good shape to pass inspection.
  7. How’s the infotainment system?
Touchscreens, speakers, navigation, or scratches on the screens — any issues there?
  8. Has the interior been cleaned or detailed regularly?
Clean interiors say “well cared for” — and that helps.

Usage & Ownership

  1. How many owners has it had?
One-owner cars often mean better documentation and history.
  2. Has the title ever been branded?
Salvage, rebuilt, flood, or lemon law branding will definitely affect value.
  3. How did you use the car?
Was it a weekend cruiser, a daily commuter, or a worksite warrior?
  4. Was the vehicle used for Uber, Lyft, or delivery services?
High daily mileage and heavy usage tell a different story than casual use.
  5. What kind of driving did it mostly do?
Highway miles are easier on a car than city driving or off-road use.
  6. Was it used to tow?
If you hauled trailers, boats, or campers, that’s something to note.
  7. Where do you live?
Region affects value. A 4WD SUV in Colorado might be worth more than the same one in Miami.
  8. What’s the weather like there?
Snow, salt, heat, and humidity all age a car in different ways.
  9. Where do you park your car?
Home Garage, Public Garage, Driveway or Street parked? A garage adds a layer of protection and value.

Maintenance & Care

  1. Do you have maintenance records?
Receipts and service logs, especially from an authorized dealer, help you prove the car’s been cared for.
  2. Did you stay on top of routine service?
Oil changes, filter swaps, tire rotations — consistency builds confidence.
  3. Was service done at a dealership or local shop?
Both are fine, but brand dealerships tend to be yield more comprehensive service results over time.
  4. Have major parts been replaced?
Think spark plugs, timing belt, or transmission fluid — the big-ticket stuff.
  5. How are the tires?
Lots of tread or nearly bald? That affects road safety and trade-in value.
  6. Are they all-season, winter, or summer tires?
The type tells a story about use and prep.
  7. Are the tires all the same brand and age?
Mismatched tires may raise red flags. Matching sets look more cared-for.
  8. Any parts recently replaced?
Battery, brakes, alternator — fresh parts are a bonus.
  9. Was it recently inspected or certified?
A clean bill of health from an inspection or certified program can increase your offer.

Modifications & Add-Ons

  1. Have you added any aftermarket parts?
Upgraded wheels, lights, grills — let us know what’s custom.
  2. Were those installed professionally?
Pro installs usually increase value (and reduce liability concerns).
  3. Any performance mods?
Suspension kits, exhaust systems, or engine tuning definitely matter.
  4. Does it have a remote starter or roof rack?
Those extras might be worth more than you think!
  5. Any tech upgrades?
Dash cams, parking sensors, rearview cameras — small gadgets add convenience and appeal.
  6. Are the windows tinted?
And was it done at a shop or DIY? That matters for legality and longevity.
  7. Added any upgrades or accessories?
Running boards, cargo organizers, premium floor mats — even small things can add value.

Most importantly, share your vehicle photos with ChatGPT.  Here’s how:

How to Share Photos with ChatGPT for Trade-In Evaluation

To help ChatGPT give a more complete evaluation of your vehicle, consider uploading clear, high-quality photos. Be sure to include:

  • Exterior shots from multiple angles (front, back, sides, and diagonal views)
  • Close-ups of any damage, scratches, or dings
  • Interior shots showing seats, dashboard, infotainment, and any signs of wear
  • Tire photos showing tread depth (hold a penny or tread gauge up close for scale)
  • Photos of the odometer, VIN, and service stickers (if available)

Once you upload these, ChatGPT can give you more insight into how your car’s condition may affect trade-in value. Keep in mind that while AI can’t replace an in-person appraisal, it can help you be better informed — and that means a stronger negotiating position when you’re ready to trade.

Think Ahead: What’s Your Next Toyota?

Once you’ve used ChatGPT to get a ballpark trade-in value, you can also start dreaming about your next Toyota. Let ChatGPT help you crunch the numbers and figure out what fits your budget.

Just add some of your financial details, like:

  • How much you owe (if anything) on your current vehicle
  • How much you’ve saved for a down payment
  • Your estimated monthly budget for a car payment
  • Whether you’re planning to finance or lease

ChatGPT can then walk you through payment estimates, potential financing options, and what models might be a good fit based on your lifestyle, estimated trade-in, and budget.

The Bottom Line

Using ChatGPT doesn’t replace talking with our expert trade and finance managers — but it can absolutely help you come in more prepared. You’ll have a better sense of your car’s worth, be ready to ask the right questions, and maybe even speed up the whole process.

At Mount Airy Toyota, we want you to feel confident, informed, and excited about your next car. So go ahead — chat with ChatGPT, gather your info, and then come see us. We’ll take it from there!

The Best of the Best: What’s the Top Tire?

The Value of Driving on Great Tires: Safety, Performance, and Investment

Tires are the only part of your car that makes direct contact with the road, making them one of the most critical components of your vehicle. They influence safety, fuel efficiency, handling, and overall driving experience. At Mount Airy Toyota tire center, we supply and install high-quality tires for every make and model, ensuring that drivers get the best performance and longevity from their investment. Let’s explore why great tires matter, from their materials and history to economic factors that influence their pricing.

The Safety Factor: Why Quality Tires Matter

Your tires play a crucial role in keeping you safe on the road. Worn-out or low-quality tires can lead to dangerous situations, including loss of traction, hydroplaning, blowouts, and decreased braking performance. Here’s why investing in top-quality tires is essential:

  • Traction and Grip: High-quality tires provide superior grip on the road, reducing the chances of skidding or sliding in wet, icy, or dry conditions.
  • Braking Performance: Better tires allow for shorter stopping distances, which can be lifesaving in an emergency.
  • Handling and Stability: Properly designed tires improve vehicle stability, reducing body roll and making steering more responsive.
  • Tread Wear and Longevity: Durable tires last longer, providing value over time and reducing the frequency of replacements.

What Are Tires Made Of?

Modern tires are complex, made of a blend of materials designed to optimize performance and durability. Key components include:

  • Natural and Synthetic Rubber: The primary component for flexibility and traction.
  • Steel Belts: Reinforce the tire’s structure and provide strength.
  • Textile Cords: Often made from polyester or nylon, these help maintain the tire’s shape.
  • Carbon Black and Silica: Enhance durability, wear resistance, and grip.
  • Chemicals and Oils: Improve elasticity and temperature resistance.

The combination of these materials is carefully engineered to ensure tires meet specific performance standards for various driving conditions.

A Brief History of Tires

The evolution of tires is fascinating. In the late 19th century, John Boyd Dunlop developed the first practical pneumatic tire, which revolutionized transportation. Before that, vehicles used solid rubber tires, which provided a rough and uncomfortable ride. The introduction of radial tires by Michelin in 1946 further transformed the industry, improving performance and longevity.

The Best of the Best: What’s the Top Tire?

While there are many high-performance tires on the market, Michelin’s Pilot Sport 4S is often regarded as the pinnacle of tire technology. It offers superior grip, handling, and durability, making it a favorite for luxury and high-performance vehicles. Other premium brands like Pirelli, Bridgestone, and Continental also offer exceptional options for different driving needs.

The Impact of Tariffs on Tire Prices

Tires are sourced from manufacturers around the world, including the United States, Japan, China, and Europe. If tariffs are introduced or increased on imported tires, prices could rise significantly. This would affect both manufacturers and consumers, leading to higher costs for raw materials and finished products. In such a scenario, buying from a dealership that sources a variety of tires might provide cost-saving options without compromising quality.

Why Buy Tires from a Reputable Dealership?

Purchasing tires from a trusted dealership ensures you receive genuine, high-quality products along with professional installation. Benefits include:

  • Expert Guidance: Dealership staff can recommend the best tires based on your driving habits and vehicle specifications.
  • Warranty Protection: Many dealership-supplied tires come with manufacturer warranties for added peace of mind.
  • Proper Storage and Handling: Dealerships store tires under optimal conditions, preventing premature degradation.
  • Comprehensive Services: From balancing and alignment to rotation services, a dealership provides complete tire care.

The Importance of Proper Installation

Even the best tires won’t perform well if they aren’t installed correctly. Proper installation impacts:

Tacoma TRD models for 2025

The Toyota Tacoma has long been a leader in the midsize truck segment, offering legendary reliability, impressive off-road capability, and rugged styling that appeals to a wide range of drivers. In 2025, Toyota has taken the Tacoma TRD lineup to the next level with significant upgrades across the board. Whether you’re looking for a sporty daily driver, a versatile off-road machine, or an adventure-ready beast, there’s a TRD model for you.

Let’s break down the three Tacoma TRD models for 2025—the TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro—and help you decide which one is the best fit.

What’s New in 2025?

Toyota has completely redesigned the Tacoma for 2025, bringing a fresh new look, updated technology, and improved performance. Here are some of the most exciting updates:

  • New i-FORCE and i-FORCE MAX Hybrid Powertrains: The 2025 Tacoma ditches the aging V6 in favor of a turbocharged 2.4-liter i-FORCE engine, producing up to 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. The available i-FORCE MAX hybrid system boosts output to a class-leading 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque.

  • New 14-inch Touchscreen: All TRD models now feature an upgraded infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
  • Multi-Link Rear Suspension: The TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro models now come with a multi-link rear suspension, improving ride quality and handling both on and off the road.
  • TrailHunter Joins the Lineup: Toyota has introduced the new TrailHunter trim for hardcore overlanders, but the TRD lineup remains a strong choice for off-road enthusiasts.

The New Toyota Tacoma & Tundra at Mount Airy Toyota NC

In the world of mid- and full-sized pickup trucks, there are a select few with histories of continued durability and power. Among these, the venerated Toyota Tacoma and Tundra have proven themselves as top contenders by continually, year after year, supplying pickup truck drivers with something rough and tough, yet also something sleek and modern. But of these two fantastic machines, which is the best pick for you?

Toyota Trucks - 2025 Tacoma & Tundra

Here is a quick glance at some of the new, notable features of both trucks:

The new Toyota Tundra comes fitted with a new suspension, plenty of updated technology, a tougher and sportier design, and more available packages, like the two new powertrain options–a twin-turbo V6 engine and a hybrid twin-turbo V6.

  • Twin-Turbo V6: can tow up to 12,000 pounds and comes paired with a 10-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission; sequential shift mode; uphill/downhill shift logic; and TOW/HAUL driving modes.
  • Hybrid Twin-Turbo V6: generates 437 horsepower and 583 lb.-ft. of torque; also comes paired with a 10-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission; sequential shift mode; uphill/downhill shift logic; and TOW/HAUL driving modes.

This year, fans of the top-selling Toyota Tacoma pickup truck will be thrilled to see and sit inside an overhauled interior, a revamp that Tacoma has never seen. Every 2024 Tacoma comes with raised seating, added headroom, and a more adjustable steering column–all designed to bring the new Tacoma to a higher level of comfort and support. The Tacoma also has plenty more upgrades this year on the interior and exterior, as well as, under the hood and body.

Tacoma and Tundra: The Specifics

It’s a tough decision, choosing between the Tacoma and the Tundra. Both are big, formidable trucks, fitted with all the newest technologies and both are easily customizable to your liking. The Tacoma, the smaller of the two trucks, is one of the highest-rated mid-size pickup trucks in the country, and the full-sized Tundra has made it to the top of most American automaker’s lists as the most popular pickup, pitting itself against the Ford F-150 and the Chevy Silverado 1500.

The 2024/2025 models of the Tacoma and Tundra come redesigned for the first time since 2022, making this year a big one for the brand. Both are set to maintain their spot at the top of any serious pickup driver’s list by touting a bulkier frame and a bit more power. Let’s take a closer look:

  • Cab and Bed Sizes

The Tacoma comes as either a two-door Xtra Cab or a four-door Double Cab, each configuration offering a little something different. The Xtra Cab allows for two passengers and has plenty of storage space behind the front seats. The Double Cab, on the other hand, offers a rear seat and allows for up to five passengers. As far as bed size, the Xtra Cab comes with a six-foot bed while the Double Cab comes with a choice of either a five-foot or a six-foot bed.

The new Tundra, in all its versions, comes as a four-door along with a little more body length and width. The Double Cab is the smallest of the two options, as the CrewMax comes with larger rear doors and more space in the back for passengers. The Tundra also comes with four bed lengths: the Double Cab with a 6.5-foot or an 8.1-foot bed; the CrewMax comes with either a 5.5-foot short bed or a 6.5-foot bed.

  • Power Under the Hood

Previous versions of the two Toyota trucks had the Tacoma as a V-6 and the Tundra as a V-8. Both come a bit differently now: the Tacoma’s sole engine choice is a turbocharged four-cylinder, while the Tundra comes with a turbocharged V-6. What’s more, the smaller turbo engines offered come with more power than they ever have before, and both the Tacoma and the Tundra offer hybrid options–the i-Force Max with an extra boost of power.

The Tacoma comes standard as a turbocharged, 2.4-liter inline-four engine with 228 horsepower. There is a step up with a 278-horsepower version of this engine, and there is also a hybrid version as an option that operates with a four-cylinder engine that produces up to 326 horsepower.

As transmission goes, an eight-speed automatic is standard in most models, but there is an available six-speed manual with certain trim levels that can produce as much as 270 horsepower. The new Tundra comes with a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter, V-6 engine with or without hybrid capabilities. The base version of the Tundra comes with 389 horsepower and the i-Force Max hybrid has 437 hp.

  • Towing and Payload

It’s no surprise the bigger Tundra can tow and haul more than the Tacoma, but as the smaller sibling, the Tacoma can hold its own as well.

In the SR5 Double Cab configuration with rear-wheel drive, the Tundra can tow up to 12,000 pounds with a total payload capacity of 1,940 pounds. Meanwhile, the Tacoma is able to handle up to 6,500 pounds and a payload capacity of up to 1,709 pounds–nothing small about that at all!

  • Going Off the Grid

Besides their luxurious rides and standout power, the Tacoma and Tundra trucks have built a reputation for off-roading, primarily in the TRD Pro trim levels. Both trucks offer the TRD Pro option that features tons of surprising upgrades that help to traverse through tough terrain. This version of the Tacoma and Tundra also comes with a more rugged physique with black trim, special coloring, unique wheels, and stylish badging throughout the interior and exterior. The TRD Pro includes four-wheel drive as standard for both models, while this feature comes as optional on most of the other trim levels. Additionally, both trucks under the TRD Pro trims come equipped with lifted suspension setups with special Fox shocks and 33-inch all-terrain tires. For ground clearance, the Tacoma’s smaller size makes it a little better than the Tundra for navigating tighter trails.

Lastly, the new Tacoma is introducing a new trim level called the TrailHunter, which is a more extreme version of the TRD Pro. The TrailHunter comes with the same mechanical upgrades as the TRD Pro, and it is set to accommodate overlanding extras like a rooftop tent and accessory lights, as well as, additional power outlets and an onboard compressor–the perfect setup for using your Toyota pickup as an outdoor tent.

What is great about the Tacoma and Tundra trucks is that both are large and agile enough to have some fun when off the beaten path, yet they are compact enough to handle any suburban commute; this versatility, in addition to the uncanny longevity, is one of the key factors to the growing popularity of Toyota truck—especially in an age where people like to have the option to head to the mountains on a whim and know that their vehicle is more than capable of handling anything.

The Dish on Dashcams

Oct 13, 2024
By Admin
Dashcams are a great way to capture evidence should you be in an accident.

The Dish on Dashcams

YouTube dashcam posts are everywhere now!  Activities caught on dashcams include meteors, animals crossing, winding mountain roads and accidents. Beyond unbearably cute bear families, having dashcam footage can protect you from potential liability for accidents, particularly when the other driver is at fault, uninsured or drives off in a hurry.

At Mount Airy Toyota, we want you to travel safely, and we know that anything can happen while you’re driving and it’s good to be prepared. Dashcams are a great way to capture evidence should you be in an accident.

Dashcams (dash cameras) have become more popular than ever in recent years. In 2023, it was estimated that 10-15% of U.S. drivers had dash cams (Yahoo! finance).

In early 2024, Yahoo Finance also reported that dashcams sales had a revenue of $4 billion in 2022 and it was estimated that this will increase to $12 billion by 2033. The article further went on to state, “The growth of the market is attributed to the amplifying rate of road accidents around the world. According to the World Health Organization, more than 1.19 million individuals die in road crashes and about 20 to 50 million people experience injuries that lead to disability. An increase in the number of cars and other vehicle purchases across the globe is projected to hike the demand for the dashboard camera market.”

The desire to have a dashcam in vehicles varies by driver, but the main reason is to protect yourself from liability in a traffic accident, particularly from incidents such as a staged accident, false insurance claims or hit-and-runs. Dashcams can also be useful to monitor your vehicle when you are not in it or to record disputes or incidents. While insurance companies typically don’t offer discounts if you have one, it can help you with claim resolution by proving you were not at fault. Many commercial vehicles rely on dash cam videos to document road incidents. Law enforcement and emergency services use dashcam footage for a variety of purposes.

There are many options to choose from on the market and here are some considerations:

  • Do you need a dashcam with a screen?
  • What about an interior camera?
  • Would you like the dashcam to monitor vehicle speed and have GPS locating?
  • How well does it work at night?
  • Is it legal in your area and what does your car insurer think about them?

It is legal in North Carolina to have a dashcam (be sure it’s not obstructing your view) and you should ask your insurance company if they offer any discounts for having one.

Best Dashcams

In 2024, Car and Driver Magazine compiled a list of their dashcam picks that focused on options, price and overall quality.

For overall use, they chose the Vantrue N4.

“The Vantrue N4 is an exceptional value, offering a dashcam, cabin-facing camera, and rearview camera. It attaches to the windshield with a suction mount, and its cameras can be adjusted for optimal coverage. The front dashcam records at 2560 by 2160 pixels but drops to 2560 by 1440 when all three cameras are used. The cabin and rear cameras have 1920 by 1080 resolution. The cameras have wide fields of view with minimal distortion, and the cabin camera includes infrared lighting for low-light conditions.” Car and Driver adds, “The N4’s integrated screen features a picture-in-picture mode that displays all three cameras’ feeds simultaneously, along with settings and recording modes. It offers low-frame-rate and low-bit-rate recording modes, but we found these can drain the car battery. The device also includes collision and motion detection, automatically saving relevant footage. A 128 GB micro SD card holds about 6.7 hours of footage.”

Car and Driver noted this pick for best overall dashcam was because of the reasonable price point, quality of image in various lighting conditions and features.  List price $289.99 Amazon

In the premium range, Car and Driver went with the Cobra SC 400D.

“As far as pure visual performance, the Cobra SC 400D was the best dashcam we tested thanks to its 4K resolution. We agreed that its video footage genuinely looked the best too. We found the touchscreen to be easy to operate and responsive, and the Cobra uses its proprietary DriveSmarter app to provide police alerts and other driver reports. If we had one minor grumble, it would be that the mount only swivels forward and backward, not side to side. However, the wide angle of the lens practically eliminates the need to do so. The Cobra secures to the windshield via a large sticky pad for the mount and a very strong magnet for the camera itself.” Shares Car and Driver. List price $399.95 Amazon

For a dashcam that won’t break your budget, Car and Driver picked the Car and Driver 1080P HD Dashcam.

Shares Car and Driver, “We appreciate that we’ll probably get some flak for including this model in this test when there are so many dash cams out there. But we were determined to evaluate our (licensed) namesake unit on its own merits—and darned if it didn’t step up as the best budget option we tested.”

“The Car and Driver 1080P Dashcam has front and rear cameras and a touchscreen interface for easy driver control. The unit has standard features like parking mode, collision detection, and a G sensor to keep one eye open after you’ve left the vehicle. “

“One thing we really liked about this model is its dual tripod option that allows different mounting iterations from the top or bottom of the camera. This feature made it easy to adjust the dash cam according to the angle of the windshield. This budget-friendly dual camera covers all the essential features and has adjustable orientations. It’s an excellent choice for dashcam beginners.” List price $49.99 Walmart

Another entry-level dashcam is the Nexar Beam. “With a reasonable price tag, it boasts the standard features you’d expect to find, like parking guardian and G-sensor collision detection, and advanced features like GPS connectivity for data overlay. Another unique option is that the app can generate an insurance incident report aligning with footage and handy GPS coordinates.” List $129.99 Amazon

For a compact model, Car and Driver’s petite pick is the Garmin Mini 2. “The Garmin Mini 2 is an excellent choice for someone looking to keep their dashcam discreet and out of the way. It’s compact enough to tuck behind your rearview mirror if so desired. The app functionality is quite nice as well, and the 1080p matched up well against the competition despite its diminutive size.” Car and Driver continues, “While it’s a nice set-and-forget dashcam, we found that it’s a bit tricky to determine whether everything is set up correctly without checking it via the app. The lack of a screen makes it difficult to see if the camera is lined up properly. Additionally, there are a few different lights that blink on the cam, and it’s confusing at first to know what they all mean. But once you get that all set, the Garmin Mini 2 is a solid choice for a tiny dash cam.” List price $129.99 Amazon.

If you want to dash in a flash, The MAXcam 360c primarily serves as a radar detector with a secondary dash-cam function and is Car and Driver’s pick for a combination device.  It isn’t ideal for those seeking only a dashcam. But for anyone wanting a radar detector with a competent camera, it’s a solid choice.

“The dashcam boasts a 2560 by 1440 resolution with a Sony Starvis image sensor that captures 30 frames per second and offers a 143-degree field of view. The video quality is contrasty (sharp), with noticeable noise reduction and compression that significantly impacts image quality. We found the MAXcam 360c performed well in low-light conditions, although finer details became blurry. It clearly captured license plates up to ten feet away under ideal conditions, but beyond that, its clarity is a miss, even in the most ideal conditions.” Car and Driver adds, “This product isn’t suitable for everyone due to its high cost and the complexity of using a radar scanner.
