Hybrid Twin-Turbo V6: generates 437 horsepower and 583 lb.-ft. of torque; also comes paired with a 10-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission; sequential shift mode; uphill/downhill shift logic; and TOW/HAUL driving modes. Truck drivers shopping for a full-size pickup usually have a specific reason for such a vehicle. These types of trucks are not only for the casual truck driver. This year, the 2024 Toyota Tundra is better than it has ever been. 2024 Toyota Sequoia The 2024 Toyota Sequoia is the latest in Toyota’s lineup to come in a TRD Pro edition. This exclusive trim level comes with tons of upgrades, but one exclusive to the Sequoia TRD Pro package is the new Terra paint color. This terra cotta/orange chocolate color is quite striking and at Mount Airy Toyota, we already have staff naming the new Terra color their favorite. The Toyota TRD Pro edition focuses mostly on off-roading and sport driving features, all of which do plenty to produce a more comfortable and exciting ride. Some upgrades to the 2024 Sequoia TRD Pro are new shocks, exhausts, and a more powerful drivetrain. There’s not only one style of this grille, but it can also come in different shapes and shades, and it is the easiest way to make your new Sequoia look unique. New Toyota Highlander The Toyota Highlander, one of the car company’s most prominent family vehicles, comes with a few changes for 2024, but nothing too drastic (if it ain’t broke…). This year, Toyota has decided to discontinue the entry-level L trim, and it has added a hands-free power liftgate that comes in the mid-level trims. For the 2024 Highlander hybrid model, Toyota has swapped the previous Bronze edition for a new and improved Nightshade Edition. The 2024 Highlander Hybrid Nightshade Edition comes with tons of stylistic changes, the most obvious, a blacked-out grille, mirror caps, wheels, and rear badging. Nightshade is available on the Highlander Hybrid LE and XLE trim levels. It’s certainly one of the sleekest-looking vehicles on Mount Airy Toyota’s lot! This added layer of style to the new Highlander provides captivating elements for both the exterior and interior–the black seats with silver accents on the interior really make the inside pop. Though the inner workings of this system are complex, using it couldn’t be easier. To help you avoid an accident, the Pre-Collision System uses advanced road-monitoring technologies to “see” the road ahead of you. Then it alerts you, the driver, in three phases: Phase 1–Alert. Once the system detects something (a vehicle, pedestrian, animal, etc.) in the direct path of the car, an audio and/or visual forward-collision warning will be triggered. This is simply to let you know there is something up ahead. Phase 2–Brake Assist. Once an object has been detected and an alert to the driver has been made, brake assist is applied to help the driver begin to slow the car. Phase 3–Automatic Braking. If the driver does not respond to phases 1-2, the 4Runner will use the Pre-Collision System to deploy automatic braking. The Toyota 4Runner has quickly, in terms of years, created a Wrangler-like cult following, and with such a bevy of features and performance levels, it isn’t difficult to see why. 2024 Toyota Prius Motortrend’s “car of the year,” the 2024 Toyota Prius is the new gold standard in hybrids. The 2024 Prius model is longer, lower, and wider and has updated headlights and taillights, giving it a sleek yet substantial look, one much sportier than ever before. Though the new exterior look might be the most obvious difference of the new Prius, the most notable update is the 2.0-liter hybrid engine. Both the hybrid engine and the electric motors seamlessly work together to provide an incredibly smooth ride. While driving the 2024 Prius, the electric motors will run, but the 2.0-liter hybrid engine will take over when the charge runs low. There’s also a larger, more energized battery that offers 52 miles per gallon and up to a 44-mile range when driving all-electric. Performance Now that you have a fundamental idea of what to expect from the 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Bronze Edition, let’s discuss what is in store for all of the new Highlander models, starting with performance: Engine and Transmission A 3.5-liter V6 engine comes standard on the Toyota Highlander. This engine is good for 295 horsepower and is matched with an eight-speed automatic transmission. You can get the SUV in either front- or all-wheel drive. This power train is ideal for daily commutes, as it can take care of on-ramps with ease and get you from zero to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds. The Highlander Hybrid utilizes a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors. This model gives you exceptional fuel economy, but it’s not quite as powerful as the combustible engine models. The Hybrids are also available in either 4WD or AWD. And the powertrain includes a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). All and all, this results in a maximum of 243 hp and a zero-to-60 of 7.3 seconds. Fuel Economy According to EPA estimates, all Highlander V6 4WD models give you 29 mpg on the highway, and models with the AWD configuration will deliver 27 mpg. Not surprisingly, the Hybrid models provide much better results; 4WD variants will deliver about 36 mpg city and 35 mpg highway, and AWD models will deliver roughly 34 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. Driving Perhaps one of the most appealing qualities of the Toyota Highlander has always been its ride quality. If you didn’t know what vehicle you were driving, you might mistake it for a luxury model. The Highlander’s handling may not provide you with the dynamic experience of a sports car, but driving feels stable, responsive, and secure. And the SUV will feel smooth on most road conditions, even over rougher pavement and minor potholes. In short, this is one of the most comfortable three-row SUVs on the market for family commutes. Interior The interior of the 2022 Highlander is can be summed up as comfortable. The cabin has been constructed with top-tier materials, providing an overall sense of luxury. There is plenty of room in the cabin as well. You can choose between a seven-seat and eight-seat configuration. Many enthusiasts prefer the seven-seat configuration because it includes uber-comfortable captain’s chairs in the second row. Headroom in the front row comes to 39.9 inches in the Toyota Highlander, while second-row headroom is 39.4 inches. The headroom is 36.1 inches in the third row. As far as legroom is concerned, you’ll get 40.4 inches in the front row, 41 inches in the second row, and 27.7 inches in the third row. These are not the highest numbers on the market, but the Highlander provides enough space to be competitive in the segment. Additionally, the Highlander provides 6.0 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, which increases to 48.4 cubic feet with the third-row seats folded down. Furthermore, you can fold both the third and second rows for a total of 84.3 cubic feet of cargo room. In terms of infotainment technology, most Highlander grades are equipped with an eight-inch infotainment display, though the Limited and Platinum grades include a 12.3-inch screen. Buyers can opt for an eleven speaker JBL sound system. And every Highlander model comes equipped with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility to go with a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot and Sirius XM Satellite Radio. Exterior The overall exterior styling and design of the 2022 Toyota Highlander will carry over from those of previous years. After all, it’s incredibly fine, sleek, and attractive, which is likely why the manufacturer hasn’t prioritized making any major changes. Along with distinguished design lines and curves, the Highlander has a short wheelbase and a bulky body (and if you see how it all comes together, you’ll see that’s a good thing). Plus, the wheel size is just disproportionate enough to turn heads. Overall, the Highlander boasts a sporty design, 20-inch alloy wheels, and provides features like optional twin-tip exhaust and auto-leveling LED headlights. Safety While neither the NHTSA nor IIHS has tested the 2022 Toyota Highlander, we can expect nothing but greatness. In the 2021 model year, the Highlander received an incredible five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, and the IIHS made the Highlander a top safety pick for 2020. Seeing as how minimal changes have been made to this model, we expect the 2022 Highlander to be among the safest vehicles on the road. Blind-spot monitoring and rear traffic alert are standard on Highlander XLE models, and automatic braking and front and rear parking assistance will be included on the Limited grade. Moreover, adaptive headlights with auto-leveling will come standard on Platinum models. A Top Safety Pick honor was largely presented to the 2020 Highlander because of its curve-adaptative LED headlights. Even without that feature, however, the SUV received a “Good” score and all six crash tests. The 2022 Highlander offers a ton of standard safety features, including Toyota’s Safety Sense package (i.e., lane departure warning with steering assist, pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, etc.), traction and stability control, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, cyclist detection, road sign recognition, lane tracing assist, and much more. Other Available Grades We talked about the 2022 Highlander Hybrid and Hybrid Bronze Edition, but let’s cover the other grades available for this model: Highlander L The base Highlander offers drivers LED headlights and taillights, body-color door handles and mirror caps, and 18-inch allow wheels to go with an eight-passenger configuration and cloth seats. For convenience, the Highlander L comes with three-zone automatic climate control, cargo tie-downs, and one-touch up/down window control. Highlander LE Step up to the Highlander LE and LED fog lights, as well as a power liftgate, are added. You also get sunshades in the second row, a leather-trimmed shift knob, and blind-spot monitoring among other features. Highlander XLE Right in the middle of the pack, the Highlander XLE comes with premium 18-inch wheels, roof rails, and a power moon roof. Inside, drivers get a seven-inch instrument gauge display, captain chairs in the second row, leatherette seats, heated front seats, and a height/tilt power-adjustable passenger seat. Wireless device charging and auto-dimming rearview mirror are also included. Highlander XSE The XSE grade essentially takes the XLE and makes it sportier. The 20-inch dark finished alloy wheels are joined by black headlight backing and a shorter exterior styling. You can opt for red leather seats on this model, and you’ll also receive features like ambient cabin lighting and a sport-tuned suspension system. Highlander Limited The Toyota Highlander Limited approaches luxury’s door. Drivers get 20-inch alloy wheels finished in chrome to go with a chrome grille surround and body-color side paneling. The interior includes a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, and wood-like trim adorning the cabin. The step up to the Limited grade also comes with a load of convenience features, including front and rear parking sensors, driver’s voice amplification, a hands-free power liftgate, and more. Highlander Platinum The top-tier 2022 Toyota Highlander Platinum offers a rear cargo area bumper protector and an amazing panoramic moon roof. Heated seats in the second row and a head-up display also come standard, as do built-in navigation, a 360-degree camera system, a digital review mirror, and rain-sensing wipers. Electric vehicles are growing in demand each year, and creating more and more buzz as the technology continues to become better and more efficient. At Mount Airy Toyota, we’re interested not only in the overall automotive shift away from fossil fuels, but also in what that means for our dealership, our city, and way of life in Mount Airy. We wanted to know more about where Toyota fits into the electric vehicle market, when we might be seeing a full electric car release from Toyota, and what it means for Mount Airy Toyota in the future. Electric cars are the future; it's a statement we have heard before, that we have seen come into reality, and seems to become more and more standard, albeit at a slow pace, every year. With every global climate report delivering the same message about limited fossil fuels and negative climate impact, electric cars are gaining more traction and popularity. If you’re 35 or younger, it’s inevitable that you will be driving an electric car in your lifetime. The face of the automotive industry is rapidly producing new technologies to fill the needs of an electric driven economy. What is an electric vehicle? Electric vehicles are battery charged, and run at least partially on electricity. There are a variety of options to consider when you think about electric cars. Electric vehicles can range from plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, fuel-cell electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles that use plug-in rechargeable batteries, and there are pure electric vehicles. How do they work? Instead of vehicles running on gasoline like in internal combustion engine vehicles, electric vehicles run either partially or completely on electricity stored in a battery. Thus, electric vehicles don’t produce tailpipe pollution. They also minimize wasted energy by turning the car off when stopped and by charging the battery when braking. Electric vehicles are more energy- efficient than gasoline or diesel powered engines, which explains why they are in such high demand. Are electric vehicles clean? Producing electricity isn’t necessarily clean; electricity can produce heat-trapping gases, pollution at the source of the electricity generation, or in the extraction of fossil fuels. It’s definitely worth noting though that battery electric cars charged off of the dirtiest coal grid still produce lower pollution than their gasoline-powered counterparts. If electric vehicles are charged by wind or solar energy sources, they are virtually emission free! How do they charge? As mentioned before, they can charge when braking as you drive, but mainly they are charged at home. With a 240-volt outlet (a power similar to what it takes to run clothes in the dryer), most electric vehicles can charge fully overnight. Once fully charged, electric vehicles can typically drive between 70 to 100 miles per day (which is within the average range of what most Americans drive daily). Fast-charging stations can provide 60 to 80 miles of range for every 20 minutes of charging. Battery technologies will change, as we realize things such as the fact silicon batteries provide 30% more range, and as we find less expensive batteries. Battery technology is progressing so quickly, and it’s only going to get better. Between 2008 and 2014, the price of batteries dropped more than 70 percent. The development of larger and more powerful batteries means that batteries will also require larger charging systems and longer time requirements. Manufacturers are now willing to put the money forward to develop more electric vehicles. But, the main issue manufacturers face is the cost-curve of having electric vehicles more competitive in the market place, versus demand actually pulling them out of the manufacturers. EV’s are less than 2% of vehicle sales in America. In 2017, electric cars reached a global sales record with 1 million cars sold. What or who do you think of when you hear about electric vehicles? Elon Musk probably comes to mind, and for good reason. As recently as January 2019, the American-made company, Tesla, released their goal to have 400,000 new electric vehicles on the road. In March 2016, the Tesla Model 3 was released, and has, since then, reigned as the electric car to turn the electric vehicle market mainstream. Starting at $35,000, the Tesla Model 3 is reasonably affordable, and comes in with 220 miles of range and all the equipment to drive autonomously. With software updates that increase the mileage and efficiency of the vehicle without taking a trip to the dealership, the Model 3 has ruled in the electric vehicle domain, and we can see why. Tesla has put more electric cars on the road than any other company, but across the automotive industry, everyone has electric cars in the works for the coming years. What are the hurdles automotive industries are facing with electric vehicles? As battery-electric vehicles and hybrids become more popular, infrastructure everywhere will have to adapt. Beyond city hubs in California, and select other cities, the reality is that of fall 2018, there were an estimated 22,000 public charging stations between the US and Canada. Therefore, before most consumers can consider, or much less, commit to an electric car, they would have to consider the distances they want to drive in their electric vehicle, and if there are charging stations within reasonable distances. Of course, automotive manufacturers have to be concerned about the charging stations as well. Automakers can either build their own charging networks or rely on third-party networks. Tesla has 1,344 Supercharger stations worldwide, with around 580 of those in the US. While they have discussed the possibility of opening their network to other automakers, the stations only currently serves Tesla. Volkswagen plans to install 2,800 charging stations in 17 US cities by June 2019. Other automakers rely on third-party companies, which can be cheaper, but more uncertain with a lack of consistency for coverage. For example, Electrify America is installing charging stations at more than 100 Walmarts in 34 states. ChargePoint is increasing their charging stations 50-fold by 2025, building up from 53,000 charging stations. Building electric charging stations can be a bureaucratic situation with lots of red tape in the way, whether that’s finding real estate to build the station, or to negotiate with local utility companies. But the demand for charging stations is increasing, as more apartment and condo complexes are providing charging opportunities, and bus and trucking industries are also shifting towards electric power. Fun fact: Just as a comparison, there are about seven times more gas stations than charging stations in the US and Canada—about 168,000! What are the cons of owning or leasing an electric vehicle? It is not a surprise to the average American that electric vehicles are more expensive than the average car. The average price of an electric vehicle is about $30,000-$35000. But, the savings in gasoline can average about $1400 on gas, costing about $540 a year to charge an electric car, in comparison. To break even and offset the fuel savings, you would have to keep the car for around 11 years, which is actually the average time that most US drivers keep a car before trading in or selling. What are the pros? Although there is not a lot of data on what the exact savings are on electric car maintenance, there is a lesser chance of breaking down, the service packages are cheaper, and the vehicles themselves are much better than gasoline alternatives at converting energy to movement from a standing start. They don’t require oil changes or experience as much wear and tear on the brakes. Electric and hybrid vehicles can also enjoy discounts of up to 10% on car insurance, because they tend to be safer and less likely to break down. Some electric vehicles also receive tax breaks! How do they drive? For automotive enthusiasts, there’s something about the control over the vehicle, the roar of the engine, the power behind the wheel… and it’s enough to never consider making the switch to an electric vehicle. Electric vehicles do lack manual shifting, they are extremely quiet, and of course, there won’t really be a reason to stop at a gas station unless you’re needing snacks. Any electric car you sit behind the wheel of is a totally different drive than any other car. They are quiet, smooth, and refined. They are high-quality and are equipped with the latest technology. Why has Toyota not been seen in the electric car market yet? Toyota does not offer any full-electric vehicle in the United States. Moreover, Toyota has almost conspicuously not been producing or teasing any line-up of full battery-electric cars to come, and the reason might surprise you. Basically, it comes down to Toyota believing that hybrids are a better option between internal-combustion vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell-vehicles. There is a serious question about the range and capability of the electric car and what redesigns it will have to face in order to get adopted by the average American. Those challenges are being addressed with better batteries, larger range capabilities, and the implementation of charging stations. Look on the road these days and you’ll see a lot of one thing and not a lot of another – SUVs vs. sports cars. Buyers have driven away from small, cramped, and low and toward spacious seating with a view from a higher vantage point. At least for the traditional consumer, having room for the family and all their things, or perhaps the crew of friends and all their dogs, has made SUVs more popular than ever before. Toyota's recent release of the C-HR and its upcoming release of the 2019 RAV4 are strong contenders in a crowded market. Toyota has long earned love and loyalty for its RAV4, 4Runner, Highlander, Landcruiser, and Sequoia models. This year brought the introduction of the crossover C-HR, which was designed to fit a particular niche missing from the traditional Toyota lineup: something to bridge the gap between the SUVs, sedans, and compact cars. Edmunds named the C-HR as one of the Best Small SUVs for 2018. Those who remember the Toyota FJ Cruiser will recognize the signature white roof available on the C-HR with a Radiant Green Mica, Ruby Flare Pearl, or Blue Eclipse Metallic body. Its body styling is edgier than typically seen from Toyota, in part because the C-HR carried over from the maker’s now defunct Scion brand. The C-HR’s comes with push-button start, a 7-inch touch screen, 4.2-inch information display for the driver, auto-dimming rear view mirror, electric parking brake, and folding mirrors. Walk up to your C-HR with smart key technology and once you touch the door handle, the mirrors will unfold and display an illuminated logo on the ground. These lights complement the car’s halogen headlines, LED daytime running lights, and sculpted taillights. However, Toyota shoppers will have noticed a lack in connectivity across the line. There’s no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto currently available, but this tech is expected to be added in 2019. What else is coming from Toyota in 2019? The fifth-generation RAV4. The RAV4 was the bestselling non-pickup in the US in 2017. It was last redesigned in 2013. The new model will feature Dynamic Torque Vectoring All-Wheel Drive with rear Driveline Disconnect, meaning that the engine can not only direct available power to the rear wheel, it can pick the wheel that has the most traction. When all-wheel drive no longer is needed, the system disconnects and reverts to front-wheel drive. Partnered with the Toyota New Global Architecture platform, which Toyota started using 2015 with the Prius, the result is a vehicle built to go further and do more. “The implementation of the TNGA platform allows RAV4 to adopt the charisma of a bolder and tougher SUV, but in a package that is lower and wider,” writes Toyota. “The longer wheelbase and wider front and rear tracks provide a stable, confident driving platform. For off-road prowess, the shorter front and rear overhangs will aid in RAV4’s ability to overcome rugged terrain.” To be released in winter 2018 (soon!), the RAV4 will come in three versions: the premium Limited, rugged Adventure grade, or stylish XSE Hybrid that will be available spring 2019. On the Limited edition, standard features include a front-row moonroof and 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory and 2-way lumbar support, plus a newly-designed 7-inch Multi-Information Display (MID) and, for the first time in a Toyota vehicle in North America, a Digital Display Rearview Mirror. Options include ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a panoramic moonroof, and hands-free liftgate.
